Marshall County Auditor Angie Birchmeier would like to help the citizens of Marshall County better understand local government and the functions of the Auditor’s office.
The position of County Auditor is constitutionally elected and is restricted to holding office for a maximum of eight (8) years within any twelve (12) year period. To be eligible to hold the office of the County Auditor, the person must be a resident of the County in which they wish to be elected and must have been a resident for one year before the election. In addition, there are statutory requirements for continuing education with training provided by various state agencies.
The County Auditor is the principal financial officer in county government and wears many hats. Part of the daily responsibilities include coordination of tax collection and distribution, along with the County Treasurer. The Auditor ensures the proper distribution of funds and is responsible for payroll, accounts payable, property transfers, deductions, and financials.
The State of Indiana requires the auditor to prepare an annual financial report no later than 60 days after the close of the fiscal year. That report is uploaded to the Gateway portal for transparency. The auditor is also required to upload compensation for all county employees from the previous year no later than January 31st of each year.
The County Auditor is required to attend Commissioner and Council meetings and keep the minutes and all associated documents from those meetings. Throughout this series, Auditor Birchmeier hopes to help the citizens of Marshall County better understand the auditor's role in local government.
The Marshall County Building is open to the public from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday.
Residents are welcome to call the Marshall County Auditor’s Office at 574-935-8555 with any questions or concerns.
