Garbage fees for residents in the City of Plymouth are increasing with the passage of a new ordinance.
On Monday evening, members of the Plymouth Common Council heard the first reading of an ordinance to increase garbage collection for Republic Services, which provides this service to city residents.
The City of Plymouth recently negotiated a one-year extension of the current contract. The extension begins on November 1 and ends on October 31, 2025. The contract extension includes a $1.56 increase in the total collation charge.
The ordinance states that the City's fees have not increased in previous years to reflect the total charge by Republic under the last contract. This ordinance aims to increase the city's garbage removal fees to reflect the actual cost charged by Republic Services and administrative expenses incurred by the City for garbage removal.
Residential and apartment customers currently pay $16.57 monthly; the new rate will be $19.88. Commercial customers currently pay $36.49 monthly; their new rate will be $39.80.
The City Council will hear the ordinance's second and third readings at its October 28th meeting. Comments on the increase are welcome during the meeting.
