An Argos man faces multiple charges after fleeing from officers and climbing into a hospital ceiling following a cold-weather rescue attempt.
Adrian A. Arvizu, 38, of Argos, was arrested January 26 after a series of incidents that began with a medical emergency call and ended with a standoff in a hospital ceiling.
Shortly before 9 p.m. January 26, Trooper Adam Kirk, along with other troopers from the Indiana State Police Peru Post and deputies from the Miami County Sheriff's Office, responded to a report of a man requiring medical assistance.
Officers located Arvizu's unoccupied vehicle in the median near U.S. 31 and County Road 950 South. They found Arvizu nearly three-quarters of a mile from his vehicle, exposed to subfreezing temperatures.
He was transported to Dukes Memorial Hospital for treatment.
While at the hospital, Arvizu became uncooperative and fled from officers, locking himself in an adjacent room. He then climbed into the ceiling space above the room.
Despite commands from officers and pleas from family members, Arvizu refused to come down.
Officers eventually entered the ceiling space to apprehend him. Arvizu became combative during the encounter but was taken into custody and transported to the Miami County Jail.
Arvizu faces three preliminary misdemeanor charges of resisting law enforcement, criminal mischief, and disorderly conduct as a Class B misdemeanor.
Trooper Kirk was assisted by other members of the Indiana State Police Peru Post, the Miami County Sheriff's Office, and the Peru Police Department.
Arvizu is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
