A district policy covering student cellphone usage in Red Hill Unit #10 still remains uncertain heading into the new school year.

The Unit #10 Board of Education meeting Thursday, July 23rd in Bridgeport voted 3-2 against the first reading of a revised policy that would have required teachers to lock student cellphones in cases to prevent their use while classes are in session. The measure failed after a lengthy discussion among board members and district principals on its pros and cons.

However, a consensus of the board indicated to Superintendent Jakie Walker that the district continue with its current policy of placing the cellphones in holders. Walker was also instructed to revise the policy to allow student use during lunch periods along with other modifications.

The board will continue to study the matter and it will be brought up again on Thursday, August 6th when the board meets in a special session to conduct walkthroughs of the district buildings prior to the new school year.
