The Plymouth Common Council has taken the first step toward increasing the clothing and automobile allowances paid to members of the city's volunteer fire department, in line with new state legislation.
At a recent meeting, council members heard the first reading of an ordinance amendment that would raise the annual allowances for volunteer firefighters and volunteer EMTs/Paramedics. The proposed increase is intended to recognize the volunteers' service to the city and to bring local policy into compliance with state statute.
Under the proposed amendment, the clothing allowance would increase from $100 to $250 per year, and the automobile allowance would also increase from $100 to $250 per year.
Both allowances are paid annually in December.
Volunteers who have not yet completed a full year of service would receive $21 per month for each allowance, rather than the full annual amount.
The ordinance amendment would take effect immediately upon passage. The City Council is expected to approve the state-required increase at its next regular meeting on Monday, November 9th.
