Prep Report: Shelbyville tennis wins first conference championship since 1973

Shelbyville tennis cruised to a sweep of Speedway Wednesday to secure the program’s first conference championship since 1973.

With the 5-0 home win over the Sparkplugs, the Golden Bears improved to 13-5 this season and finish 6-0 against Hoosier Legends Conference opponents. Monrovia is the only school in the 8-school HLC that does not have a tennis program.

The conference championship is the fifth in program history. The first three came in consecutive years starting in 1951. After a 20-year gap, Shelbyville captured another South Central Conference championship in 1973.

The Golden Bears did not win a Hoosier Heritage Conference title during its membership from 1997 to 2025.

The tennis program is the school’s first conference champion since joining the HLC this fall.

At No. 1 singles, Kashton Laycock improved to 9-9 this season with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Michael Broida.

Bram Kolkmeier secured his team-leading 16th win of the season with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Ethan Lowe at No. 2 singles.

Kody Sellers defeated Ryan Mott at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-0.

At No. 1 doubles, Jack Van Wye and Cooper Reed collected their 12th win of the year with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Paul Tice and Cooper Davis.

Owen Shively and Grant Tackett blanked Matthew West and Benjamin Polites at No. 2 doubles, 6-0, 6-0.

Boys tennis

Eastern Hancock 3, Triton Central 2

At Triton Central, the Tigers won a pair of three-set matches but could not secure a third win to defeat the Royals.

At No. 2 singles, Bradyn Robinson defeated Eastern Hancock’s Ross Wennen, 5-7, 6-4, 10-5.

Cash Eck and Graham Gast produced a 4-6, 7-5, 13-11 win over Parker Robertson and Evan Kinder at No. 1 doubles.

Levi Stout topped Drayton Kermode at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-2.

And Teddy Hanna and Cash Poindexter bested Colton Ayres and Brylon Scott at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, 6-4.

Volleyball

Mt. Vernon def. Shelbyville, 30-28, 25-9, 20-25, 25-14

At Mt. Vernon, Vizma Erkmanis led the victorious Marauders (13-9) with 23 kills, three service aces and 12 digs.

Emersyn Llewellyn had a team-high 21 digs. And Sophia Rahmany collected 38 assists.

Triton Central dropped to 12-8.
