Prep Report: Shelbyville girls cross country runner-up at HLC Championships

With four of the top 12 finishers Saturday at Blue River Memorial Park in Shelbyville, Greenwood captured the Hoosier Legends Conference’s Girls Cross Country championship.

Kennedy Rollings (20:00) and Maci Hafen (20:25) finished 1-2 for the Woodmen, who defeated the host Golden Bears, 55-56.

Shelbyville’s America Leon (20:37) and Macey Robbins (21:04) we close behind, finished third and fourth, respectively.

But Greenwood added a 10^th-place finish from Lucy Galbraith (22:46), a 12^th-place finish from Leia Adams (23:11), and a 37^th-place finish by Penelope Walser (26:37) to earn the team title in the program’s first appearance in the conference championship race.

Also scoring points for Shelbyville were Harper Kinsey (14^th, 23:19), Kathryn Seal (19^th, 24:07) and Anne Marie Fansler (23^rd, 24:39).

Triton Central’s Audrey Morris placed 25^th in 24:55. Lillian Siegel finished 49^th in 35:05.

In the boys race, Indian Creek produced four of the top 11 finishers to hold off Greenwood, 45-53.

Greenwood’s Jack Siminski won the race in 16:19.

Shelbyville’s Shia Veach (photo) was runner-up in 16:26.

Speedway’s Luke Chastain finished third in 16:44 and was followed across the finish line by Indian Creek’s Hank Seitzinger (17:02) and Isaac Smith (17:10).

Shelbyville’s Eden Ortega placed eighth in 17:43.

The Golden Bears finished fourth overall with points from Kendryk Pike (19^th, 19:09), Anderson Mollenkopf (20^th, 19:11) and Tanner Jones (20:51).

Triton Central had three participants. Jason P’Pool finished 54^th in 22:49; Hudson Watson was 48^th in 23:16; and Luke Starost placed 58^th in 25:59.

Cross country

Hope Heritage Days Classic

Indy Genesis produced five of the top 11 finishers to capture the boys team title with 25 points. Hauser was runner-up at 39.

Southwestern finished fifth.

Running for the Spartans were Michael Sipes (23^rd, 20:09), Matthew Sipes (24^th, 20:10), Bruce O’Brien (35^th, 21:35), Ethan Sipes (36^th, 21:35), and Angus Taggart (55^th, 25:09).

Morristown’s Ryan Crisman finished eighth overall in 18:07. Also competing for the Yellow Jackets were Jasen Tweedy (30^th, 20:43), Donald Kuhn (51^st, 23:47) and Evan Trittipo (53^rd, 24:37).

In the girls race, Morristown’s Audrey VanDyke (4^th, 21:48) and Lauren Kuhn (5^th, 21:59) produced top 10 finishes but it was not enough to stop Indy Genesis from winning the team title over the Yellow Jackets, 23-38.

No other school had enough runners to tabulate a team score.

Also running for Morristown were Brooke Kuhn (15^th, 24:05), Emma Oster (22^nd, 27:07), and Madison Richardson (24^th, 27:23).

Girls golf

Franklin Regional

At The Legends Golf Course, Shelbyville’s Hana Stenger and Julie Garrison did not make the cut to the IHSAA State Finals.

Center Grove (315), Floyd Central (337) and Franklin (339) advanced in the team standings while Batesville’s Alexis Gallagher (74) and Stella Maple (82) and Roncalli’s Hannah Jansen (79) advanced as individuals.

Center Grove’s Olivia Alvey was the regional champion with a 71.

Stenger carded a 99 while Garrison finished at 104.

Boys soccer

Southwestern 10, Owen Valley 0

Landon Drake scored three goals, and Ethan Sipes had a pair of goals Friday to improve Class A, No. 15 Southwestern to 9-4-2 this season.

Also scoring for the Spartans were Aiden Mitchell, Dusty Stevens, Bruce O’Brien, Jay Utley and Bentley Wilson.

Girls soccer

Switzerland County Invitational

Shelbyville secured a 5-0 win over Jeffersonville (4-5-2) before suffering a 6-0 shutout loss to Switzerland County.

Taylor Kappes and Ashlyn Jesop each scored a pair of goals for the Pacers (9-4-1).

The Golden Bears are 8-6 this season.

Lapel 7, Triton Central 2

At Triton Central, the Class A, No. 9 Bulldogs scored four first-half goals to take a three-goal lead at halftime and added three more goals in the second half.

Leila Wilson scored four goals and had an assist for Lapel (11-1-2). Aaliyah Smitherman had two goals, and Sophia Bruce found the back of the net.

Rylee Pruitt scored for Triton Central (7-7).

Boys tennis

Eastern Invitational

Shelbyville (photo) defeated Elwood (5-0) and Eastern (4-1) to improve to 16-5 this season.

The Golden Bears lost just eight games in sweeping the singles matches against Elwood.

Shelbyville swept the doubles matches against the host Comets in the championship match.

At No. 1 doubles, Jack Van Wye and Cooper Reed improved to 15-6 with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Ethan Heck and Tyce Winkler.

Owen Shively and Grant Tackett pushed their No. 2 doubles record to 17-4 this season with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Clayton Stanley and Kaeden Romero.

Bram Kolkmeier improved to 19-2 at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over Tristan Armogum.

Kody Sellers also went three sets to defeat Blake Day at No. 3 singles, 7-6, 6-7, 10-4.

At No. 1 singles, Eastern’s Silas Flanary defeated Kashton Laycock, 4-6, 7-6, 6-1.
