Class 3A, No. 4 Indian Creek races to 42-0 win over Shelbyville

TRAFALGAR – Shelbyville football head coach Scott Fitzgerald labeled Class 3A, No. 4 Indian Creek as very efficient.

On Friday in Trafalgar, the Braves needed less than nine minutes in the second quarter and 13 plays to score four touchdowns and overwhelm the Golden Bears.

Indian Creek built a 35-0 lead at halftime and needed just one play in the third quarter to score its sixth touchdown of the Hoosier Legends Conference contest to cruise to a 42-0 victory that keeps the Braves (6-0, 4-0 HLC) atop the conference standings.

“That’s what you kind of call laying an egg,” said Fitzgerald after the disappointing performance. “I take that. That’s on me. We have to have them better prepared and ready to go. We will make some changes and do what we need to do to get ready for next week.”

Indian Creek receiver Hunter Worley had five catches for 159 yards and four touchdowns – all in the first half Friday.

After a 68-yard run by Patrick Dowty flipped the field, Indian Creek quarterback Evan Clark connected with Worley for a 9-yard scoring strike midway through the first quarter.

After a Shelbyville turnover on a punt return, Worley took a pop pass in the backfield from Clark, found a seam and raced 40 yards to the end zone.

Shelbyville’s next possession ended with a failed fourth down attempt. Two plays later, Worley scored from 36 yards out.

Worley found room to run down the Shelbyville sideline on his team’s next possession and went 69 yards for his fourth touchdown of the game.

The Braves finished the half with a Dowty 3-yard scoring run that ended a 5-play drive – the longest of the night for the varsity unit.

With the score 35-0 at halftime, Shelbyville was faced with chasing down the Braves with a running clock.

The Golden Bears punted on the first possession of the second half and Paxton Walters raced 68 yards for a touchdown on the very next play.

“We had opportunities to make some tackles in places and we didn’t tackle very well, we didn’t get off blocks very well, and those were things we saw during the week. We didn’t execute for anything tonight,” said Fitzgerald.

Shelbyville’s defense produced back-to-back interceptions on Indian Creek’s first two possessions but the offense ran three plays and punted after each turnover. It was a sign of things to come.

The Golden Bears had 82 yards rushing and just 18 yards passing and ran just eight plays across midfield through the first three quarters.

“The passing game didn’t get anything going but the running game didn’t get a whole going for us either and that’s kind of the start for us,” said Fitzgerald.

Dowty and Walters each eclipsed more than 100 yards rushing and scored a touchdown.

Indian Creek remains the only unbeaten team in the HLC. Beech Grove (5-1, 3-1) and Tri-West (4-2, 3-1) sit one game back in the standings.

Greenwood defeated Triton Central to climb up into fourth in the standings at 3-3 (2-2). The Woodmen travel to McKeand Stadium next week to face the Golden Bears (3-3, 1-3).

Speedway (3-3, 1-3), Monrovia (2-4, 1-3) and Triton Central (2-4, 1-3) round out the conference standings after week six.
