Ed Loeb Field at Lawrenceville High School, home of the football Indians, was one of the very first high school artificial turf football fields built in southern Illinois and it will now be getting an over half million-dollar facelift.
The Lawrence County Unit #20 Board of Education met in special session on Wednesday, October 4th and after a lengthy discussion, moved to hire the firm of Ten-Cate (tin-cot-uh) based out of Chattanooga, Tennessee for a turf replacement project at the field.
Ten-Cate is known world-wide and is the #1 producer of artificial sports turf in the United States with locations across the country. They were selected from among three bidders for the project to replace the 18-year-old turf.
Superintendent Doug Daugherty told GIANT-FM WAKO News that the original turf was installed in 2008 and was under warranty for 8 years, but lasted long past that with no major problems and is now worn down.
The replacement will cost just over $584,000 and will be paid for through 1% tax money that has been set aside by the district over the years for maintenance and eventual replacement with no additional costs to district taxpayers.
It is anticipated that work at the field will start in a few weeks and perhaps be finished around Christmas, weather permitting.
