The Shelbyville Plan Commission voted to send favorable recommendations on three rezone requests to the Shelbyville Common Council.
At its monthly meeting Monday night at City Hall, the commission approved a rezone request from Centaur Acquisition, LLC, to start the process of building a community center on the property at Horseshoe Indianapolis Casino and Racetrack.
The community center would be located at the southeast corner of the intersection of County Road 200 West and County Road 450 North near the back side structures of the racetrack that hosts Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing from April through November.
The community center will consist of a worship area, meeting rooms, offices for chaplains, and a kitchen area to prepare food for approved functions such as small banquets or gatherings.
St. Joseph Catholic Church wants to rezone several parcels of property that have been purchased in preparation for a larger development project for the local church.
The church plans to improve and expand its campus footprint, including remodeling and restoring the church rectory, construction of a new gymnasium, and reconfiguring the site to allow for better traffic flow for families with students at the school and parishioners attending church functions.
To expand, the church was requesting rezoning five properties at 301 E. Hendricks St., 307 E. Hendricks St., 311 E. Hendricks St., 310 Center St., and 125 E. Broadway. The properties currently have three different zoning designations with the proposal changing them all to IS (Institutional).
The third request Monday came from R2K Enterprises, LLC, to rezone the property at W. County Road 400 North, just west of Tom Hession Drive, from Business Highway to Light Industrial.
The nearly 6-acre property is approximately 200 feet wide and 1,300 feet deep. R2K Enterprises wants to use the back portion of the property for outdoor storage, specifically for boats and campers.
All three zone requests must now be approved by the common council.
