News

An officer with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department arrested a Peru man last Saturday after the county Dispatch Center received report of a possibly impaired driver who was northbound on U.S. 31.

At approximately 4:30 May 5th Deputy Truty located the suspect vehicle near 11th Road and initiated a traffic stop. During his investigation evidence of narcotics was discovered.

Matthew D Mathis, 44, of Peru was transported to the Marshall County Jail and booked for possession of a controlled substance and possession of a narcotic drug and issued a $3,000 cash bond.

Readers are reminded that charging information supported by an affidavit of probable cause is merely an allegation that a crime has been committed and that there is only probable cause to believe a crime has been committed. They are presumed innocent throughout the proceedings and are entitled to be represented by counsel and entitled to a trial by jury at which the State is obligated to provide proof beyond a reasonable doubt before a judgment of guilt may be made.
