“Contacting 811 is the law, and the process is quick and convenient for all Hoosiers,” said NIPSCO President and Chief Operating Officer Vince Parisi. “Accidentally striking a utility line can result in significant repair expenses, inconvenient outages, penalties, serious injuries and even loss of life."

Examples of projects needing a locate request include installing fences or mailboxes, planting trees or shrubs, and constructing patios or decks. Even shallow garden digging can be dangerous because utility line depths may differ due to erosion, prior work, or uneven ground.
While homeowners or professionals may think they know where underground utilities are, the only dependable way to confirm is by contacting 811.
“Over 80 percent of damage to our natural gas lines last year was caused by failing to contact 811 or follow safe digging practices,” added Parisi. “NIPSCO proudly supports 811 Day and reminds all our customers and communities to call before you dig every day of the year.”
