Two Indiana State Police troopers represented their department last week at the 2nd Annual Top Trooper Competition, hosted by the Ohio Highway Patrol at the OHP Training Academy — including Master Trooper Andrew W. Cochran, whose duty assignment is SWAT and who resides in the Bremen District.

Cochran was joined by Trooper Caroline A. Roberts from the Bloomington District, with each state agency invited to send one female and one male trooper. Competitors were required to hold the rank of Trooper to be eligible.

The Top Trooper Competition tested participants across four demanding categories:

• Driving: Timed maneuverability on an emergency vehicle operations course
• Physical Fitness: CrossFit-style exercises
• Firearms: Proficiency with department-issued platforms
• Leadership: Assessment interviews before a panel of senior officers to demonstrate leadership abilities and professionalism

Awards were presented for Overall Top Team, Overall Top Female, Overall Top Male, and individual category awards.

Cochran scored 8th in the firearms category and finished 18th as Overall Top Male. As a team, the Indiana State Police troopers finished 8th on the competition's obstacle course.

Roberts finished 9th among 30 competitors from across the United States as Overall Top Female. She placed 6th in the fitness category, 8th in firearms, and scored in the top third of the leadership interview.

The competition brought together troopers from state agencies across the country, putting their driving, fitness, marksmanship, and leadership skills to the test in a multi-day challenge.
