Waldron receives bye at Shelbyville Tennis Sectional

Waldron tennis has wins over the entire sectional field this season.

It seems fitting the Mohawks received the bye Sunday night when the Indiana High School Athletic Association announced the state tournament pairings for the 60^th Annual Boys Tennis State Tournament.

Shelbyville High School is again the host site for the sectional tournament that begins Tuesday with a quarterfinal round match featuring the host Golden Bears and Triton Central.

The winner advances to take on Waldron Wednesday in the semifinals.

The other semifinal match Wednesday pits Morristown against Southwestern.

The sectional championship match is scheduled for Thursday.

Shelbyville has an early September 3-2 win over Triton Central on its resume. The Golden Bears won both doubles matches and got a No. 1 singles win by Kashton Laycock over Brayden Hoover to defeat the Tigers.

Shelbyville has been stellar in the month of September, winning its final 10 matches and 14 of its last 15, to improve to 16-5.

The winner faces Waldron, ranked No. 4 in District 4. The Mohawks feature Charlie Fischer at No. 1 singles, now the career wins leader for the tennis program.

Waldron is the defending sectional champion. The Mohawks have won three sectional championships since 2019.

Triton Central’s last sectional title came in 2024.

Shelbyville has not won a sectional championship since 2022.

The Shelbyville Sectional champion will face the Perry Meridian Sectional champion in one semifinal of the Center Grove Regional on Oct. 6.

The other semifinal pits the Center Grove Sectional champion against the Connersville Sectional champion.
