Triton Central's Robertson, Baugh win track and field sectional titles

Triton Central produced a pair of track and field sectional champions and a total of nine Shelby County athletes advanced to regional competition.

Zeke Robertson, a hurdling state finalist in 2024, won the 300-meter hurdles Thursday at the Shelbyville Sectional with a time of 39.65 seconds. The junior edged out Center Grove’s Ben Tapak (39.82) to earn the title.

Robertson also finished fourth in the 110 hurdles (16.09), missing the automatic cut to the regional by .18 seconds.

Triton Central’s 400 relay team finished fourth (43.98) with Robertson, Braden Brown, Landon Slone and Cash Compton.

Brown also qualified for the regional with a runner-up finish in the high jump, clearing six feet.

Senior Willy Baugh won the shot put event with a best throw of 52 feet, nine inches. He also placed ninth in the discus (121-8).

Waldron senior Will Larrison, who announced he will continue his track and field career at Indiana State University, finished third in the 800 (1:57.35) to advance to the regional.

In one of the closest races of the sectional, four runners crossed the finish line less than one second apart. Center Grove’s Jayden Salo (1:57.02) and Mason Vrshek (1:57.3) finished ahead of Larrison while Perry Meridian’s Alex Dial was fourth in 1:57.88.

Shelbyville senior Blake Hughes finished third in the 400 in 50.82 to earn a regional berth.

Hughes also will join Christian Powell, Kamden Turner and Logan Page at the regional in the 1,600 relay. The Golden Bears finished runner-up at the sectional in 3:27.90 – the fastest time for a Shelbyville quartet since 2018.

At the East Central Sectional, Morristown freshman Colston Allford advanced with a third-place finish in the high jump (5-10).

Allford will compete in the Lawrence Central Regional on May 29. The regional features sectional qualifiers from East Central, Greenfield-Central, Lawrence Central and Mt. Vernon.

Those advancing out of the Shelbyville Sectional will compete at the Plainfield Regional on May 29. Also headed to Plainfield will be sectional qualifiers from sectionals at Ben Davis, Plainfield and Terre Haute North.

  • Waldron’s Ethan Moody, seventh in high jump (5-8)
  • Waldron’s Cole Jones, sixth in shot put (43-0.5)
  • Waldron’s Luke Myers, ninth in shot put (39-7)
  • Triton Central’s Cash Compton, seventh in the 200 (23.53)
  • Triton Central’s Landon Slone, eighth in the 200 (24.69); sixth in the 400 (52.98)
  • Triton Central’s Henry Kemper, eighth in long jump (18-8)
  • Triton Central’s Xavier Seabrook, ninth in discus (121-8)
