Hall of Fame football coach Tim Able has seen many good high school quarterbacks over the last four decades. He is quick to point out Tri-West junior Jack Sorgi may prove to be one of the best.
“I’ve seen Jeff George (Warren Central) play in high school,” said Able. “I played against Blair Kiel (Columbus East). I have seen a lot of good quarterbacks but (Sorgi) is up there.”
The six-foot, four-inch University of Louisville commit is being groomed for the next level by a former NFL quarterback, his father Jim Sorgi, who serves as Tri-West’s passing game coordinator.
“He is really polished,” said Able. “He has great length. He has great accuracy.”
In two wins, Jack Sorgi has completed 68% of his pass attempts for 608 yards and seven touchdowns while running a similar offense used by the Indianapolis Colts during their run to the Super Bowl XLI championship. Jim Sorgi was the backup quarterback for the Colts that season.
Class 2A, No. 9 Triton Central (2-0) will get a good look at Sorgi and the Class 3A, No. 7 Bruins (2-0) Friday in its Hoosier Legends Conference debut in Lizton.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Able’s gameplan is simple – keep Sorgi off the field by controlling the line of scrimmage so running backs Braden Brown, Bo West and Cooper Marlin (photo) can move the chains and chew up the clock.
“I see similarities in what Tri-West does to what Hamilton Heights did,” said Able. “They move a lot. They blitz a lot. We’ve got to run the ball this week to have a chance in the fourth quarter.”
The fourth quarter is where Triton Central dominated Hamilton Heights in a 28-13 win Friday at Mendenhall Field. The Tigers scored two touchdowns while the defense quickly shut down the two subsequent Huskies’ drives to seal the win.
Triton Central has yet to produce a 100-yard rusher in 2025 game. A trio of running backs totaled just 104 yards on 29 carries in the home opener – most of that came in the final quarter.
The best offensive weapon has been All-State receiver Zeke Robertson (photo), who has 15 receptions for 222 yards. He took a short pass on the second play of the fourth quarter Friday against Hamilton Heights 67 yards for a touchdown that opened up a 21-13 advantage.
“That was huge,” said Able. “We ran it one other time. We hit it just right. They blitzed and ran right out of it.”
Friday’s meeting with Tri-West is just the second all-time for the two programs. It also is the inaugural meeting between the two programs as members of the newly-formed Hoosier Legends Conference.
To commemorate the meeting, the two teams will play for a traveling trophy – dubbed the Battle of I-74 trophy.
