Triton Central tops Beech Grove to capture first Hoosier Legends Conference football championship

Braden Brown ran for two touchdowns and threw for another to lead Triton Central to a 24-20 win Friday at Beech Grove to clinch the Hoosier Legends Conference championship.

Class 2A, No. 9 Triton Central improved to 7-1 overall and finished 5-0 against HLC teams to claim the inaugural title.

Trailing 7-0 early in the first quarter, Brown (photo) broke free for a 60-yard touchdown to tie the score.

On the Tigers' next possession, Brown (photo) connected on a long pass to Henry Kemper (photo) then finished the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run for a 17-14 lead that held through halftime. 

Late in the third quarter, Brown found Zeke Roberston (photo) for a 9-yard touchdown pass and a 21-7 advantage.

The Hornets scored before the end of the third quarter to cut the lead to 21-14 but Brown added another long run and Nick Tormoehlen, who was 3-3 on extra-point kicks, connected on a 40-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter.

Beech Grove added a touchdown in the game's final minutes but could not complete the comeback. The Hornets dropped to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the HLC standings.

Class 3A, No. 8 Tri-West lost Friday to Class 4A, No. 1 Indianapolis Chatard, 42-13, in a non-conference game. The Bruins are 6-2 (3-1 HLC) and can secure second place in the conference standings next Friday with a win over Beech Grove.

Indian Creek (5-3) defeated Speedway, 42-7, and are tied at 2-2 in the HLC standings with Monrovia (3-5), who lost to Bedford North Lawrence Friday, 31-26. 

Speedway is 0-8 (0-5 HLC).

Triton Central closes out its regular season schedule next Friday against former Indiana Crossroads Conference rival Indianapolis Scecina (5-3). The game will be played at Indianapolis Arsenal Tech High School.
