Shelbyville overwhelms Delta at Garrett Gymnasium

Shelbyville girls basketball’s time as a member of the Hoosier Heritage Conference is dwindling.

On Saturday at Garrett Gymnasium, the Golden Bears evened their HHC mark this season at 3-3 with a 53-30 win over Delta — a regional champion in 2025 with 15 wins this season.

Shelbyville (12-8) grounded the Eagles (15-7, 3-3) with a 20-4 start to the game. The Golden Bears hit four three-pointers in the opening quarter while Delta hit just two field goals and committed seven turnovers.

”The girls have worked really hard in practice and they are bringing the energy,” said Shelbyville head coach Kylie Weichman. “We’ve got the younger (players) now challenging every single day the upperclassmen for spots. It’s really fun to be in the program right now. It’s really fun to be in the gym with them. They are buying in and good things are happening.”

Delta’s shooting woes continued the entire game but the Eagles were able to outscore Shelbyville in the second quarter, 11-8, to cut the halftime deficit to 26-15.

The Eagles cut the lead to nine points on three separate occasions but could get no closer. The final time came after a Harper Timmerman 3 midway through the third quarter.

Hannah Baker answered for Shelbyville with a pair of free throws to get the lead back to double digits. Delta coach Tyronda Benning received a technical foul after Baker’s second free throw and Maddy Jones quickly extended the lead to 35-22.

Less than 30 seconds later, Baker tacked on two more free throws and the Golden Bears were never threatened again thanks to a 9-0 run to start the fourth quarter when they spread the floor looking for high percentage shots.

”It’s about valuing the possession and making sure we were getting what we wanted, which is either a foul, a layup or a wide open shot,” said Weichman. “We’ve have really been practicing that a lot. We knew they were a little frustrated with how they ended the third quarter and we thought our best strategy was using our free throw shooting, which is getting better, and that’s how we wanted to play the fourth quarter.”

Over the final eight minutes, Shelbyville hit all three of its field goal attempts — all at the rim — and sank 10 of 14 free throws while committing just two turnovers.

Jones hit three 3s in the win and was a perfect 6 of 6 at the line for a game-high 17 points.

Baker scored half of her 14 points at the free throw line and had four rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Jayla Ash finished with eight points and eight rebounds.

Addison Barnes led Delta with eight points. The Eagles’ 30 points were its second lowest output of the season.

Shelbyville’s final HHC game, and final home game of the season, is scheduled for Tuesday against Class 4A, No. 9 Pendleton Heights (17-3, 6-0).
