Prep Report: Waldron's doubles teams lead Mohawks to county tourney title

Waldron won both doubles matches in three sets Saturday to defeat Triton Central and capture the Shelby County Tennis Tournament title.

Waldron and Triton Central cruised through semifinal match wins over Southwestern and Morristown to set up the showdown.

Janssen Capps and Brayden Hoover secured straight-set wins at the top two singles positions. Capps defeated Charlie Fischer, 6-1, 6-1. Hoover topped Cash Young, 6-2, 6-4.

Waldron’s Lincoln Fischer produced a 6-2, 6-2 win over Bradyn Robinson at No. 3 singles.

At No. 1 doubles, Caige Sheaffer and Jackson Kuhn split the first two sets with Max Crouse and Caleb McGuire then took the third set and the win, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. The Mohawks pushed their record to 8-2 this season.

Owen Hartman and Noah Mitchell won the first set at No. 2 doubles against Drayton Kermode and Graham Gast but lost the second set. The third set was tight but the Mohawks prevailed, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5.

Cross Country

Whiteland Invitational

Shelbyville junior Shia Veach produced the fastest time Saturday to win the Whiteland Invitational at Break-O-Day Elementary School. Veach crossed the finish line in 16 minutes, 12 seconds.

Also competing for Shelbyville were Logan Reinhart (5th in 17:22), Anderson Mollenkopf (44th in 19:08), Kendryk Pike (59th in 19:46) and Everett Stegemiller (75th in 20:32).

Whiteland won the event with 55 points. The Golden Bears finished fifth with 132 points.

Shelbyville placed fourth in the girls event. Whiteland won the event with 48 points. The Golden Bears (116) finished behind Greenwood (59) and New Palestine (70).

America Leon-Torres led Shelbyville with a 9th-place finish in 20:36. Also competing for the Golden Bears were Macey Robbins (13th in 20:56), Aerin Garcia Santiago (26th in 22:26), Kat Seal (33rd in 23:11) and Avery Keller (43rd in 23:58).

Boys soccer

Southwestern (Shelby) 0, Southwestern (Hanover) 0

Class A, No. 11 Southwestern (Shelby) played to a scoreless draw Friday against the Rebels of Southwestern (Hanover).

The two teams could meet again in the Class A sectional tournament.

The Spartans (7-2-1) are at Morristown Tuesday.

Triton Central 7, Milan 2

At Triton Central Saturday, Liam Thompson and Evan Mitchell each scored three goals to lead the Tigers to their second win this season.

Bryce Toth also scored for Triton Central (2-8-1).

Andrew Berry was credited with eight saves in goal.

The Tigers host Monrovia (0-8) Tuesday.

Shelbyville 4, Yorktown 0

At Shelbyville, the Golden Bears secured their first Hoosier Heritage Conference win of the season with their first shutout victory.

Shelbyville’s goals came from Mylez Clark, Tonny Avila, Joao Rivera and Logan Addis. Goalkeeper Corbin Martin earned his first shutout.

Shelbyville improved to 4-5 (1-1 HHC). Yorktown dropped to 2-7 (1-4 HHC).

The Golden Bears are at Mt. Vernon (8-2, 5-0 HHC) Tuesday.

Girls soccer

Delta 6, Shelbyville 1

At Delta, the high-powered Eagles (8-0, 3-0 HHC) scored five first-half goals and cruised to the conference victory.

The Golden Bears (6-5) are at Connersville (4-4-2) Tuesday.

Tri-West 5, Triton Central 0

At Tri-West, the Bruins improved to 7-3 and are unbeaten against Hoosier Legends Conference opponents at 4-0.

Ella Smith and Jordan Peters each scored two goals and had an assist. Juliet Yeager also had a goal and Hadley Pickens earned two assists.

Triton Central’s 4-match win streak came to an end with its first shutout loss of the season. The Tigers are 5-2-1.

Triton Central hosts Franklin (5-4) Monday.

Boys tennis

Shelbyville Invitational

Shelbyville 3, Franklin 2

The Golden Bears got singles wins from Reece Prickett and Bram Kolkmeier and a strong performance from Aiden Smith and Wyatt Armstrong at No. 1 doubles to defeat the Grizzly Cubs.

Smith and Armstrong defeated Jonah Henry and Ethan Barnes, 6-0, 6-1.

Shelbyville 5, Columbus East 0

Shelbyville lost just 12 games in sweeping the Olympians.

At No. 1 singles, Reece Prickett topped Trevor Ernst, 6-1, 6-1.

Kashton Laycock produced a 6-4, 6-1 win over Kai Bergman at No. 2 singles.

Shelbyville 4, East Central 0

Reece Prickett won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles while Bram Kolkmeier defeated Owen Vollmer, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

Smith and Armstrong rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles. Aiden Alton and Jack Van Wye won at No. 2 doubles over Cole Allison and Jack Smith, 6-3, 6-4.

Laycock’s No. 2 singles match did not finish due to inclement weather.

Shelbyville (11-4) hosts Greenfield-Central Monday.

Volleyball

Shelbyville def. Beech Grove, 25-23, 25-16, 25-6

At Beech Grove, Lyla Wilson led the victorious Golden Bears with 13 kills, three service aces and four digs.

Alivia Lee and Jordyn Noe each had six kills for Shelbyville (6-7). Sydney Haehl had four aces and nine digs.

Addy Marshall finished with 25 assists.

Beech Grove dropped to 2-15.

The Golden Bears are at Greensburg (13-1) Tuesday.
