Prep Report: Waldron, Morristown advance to tennis sectional championship match

Waldron tennis avenged an early-season loss to Shelbyville and ended the Golden Bears’ season Thursday in the sectional semifinal round at Shelbyville High School.

The Mohawks won all three singles matches to defeat Shelbyville, 3-2.

At No. 1 singles, Charlie Fischer defeated Reece Prickett, 6-1, 6-3.

Cash Young bested Kashton Laycock at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-4.

Lincoln Fischer finished off the singles matches sweep with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Bram Kolkmeier.

The Golden Bears got a pair of strong wins in the doubles matches.

 

 

At No. 1 doubles, Aiden Smith and Wyatt Armstrong (photo) improved to 22-1 this season with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Jackson Kuhn and Caige Sheaffer. With the win, Smith and Armstrong advance to the state doubles tournament which begins next week.

Jack Van Wye and Aiden Alton finished their season with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Noah Mitchell and Owen Hartman at No. 2 doubles.

Shelbyville finished 17-6 this season.

Waldron, now 12-3, returns to Shelbyville today to face Morristown, a 4-1 winner over Southwestern Thursday in the other semifinal match.

The Spartans’ lone win came from Kyle Beck at No. 1 singles. With the win, Beck advances to the state singles tournament which begins next week.

The Shelbyville Sectional champion advances to the Center Grove Regional Tuesday to face Roncalli, who defeated Decatur Central, 5-0, to win the Perry Meridian Sectional.

Center Grove defeated Whiteland, 5-0, to advance to the regional. The Trojans will face the Connersville Sectional champion in the other regional semifinal match.

Girls soccer

Greenwood 4, Shelbyville 1

At Greenwood, Katia Loper scored three goals and had an assist to lead the Woodmen to the victory.

Aeralyn Mahachanh also scored a goal and had an assist for Greenwood (10-5-1).

Shelbyville dropped to 8-7 and close out the regular season Saturday against Yorktown (8-6-1).

Volleyball

Mt. Vernon def. Shelbyville, 25-16, 25-7, 25-9

At Mt. Vernon, Jaycee Jones had a team-high 11 kills to lead the Marauders to the Hoosier Heritage Conference win.

Aubry Dowling finished with 13 digs while setters Sophia Rahmany and Amelia Anderson combined for 31 assists.

Mt. Vernon improved to 16-7 (5-1 HHC).

Shelbyville (10-15, 1-5 HHC) hosts New Palestine (20-3, 4-1 HHC) Tuesday.
