Prep Report: Van Wye's two goals lead Shelbyville to HHC win over Yorktown

Ava Van Wye scored two goals to lead Shelbyville to a win in its final Hoosier Heritage Conference girls soccer game Saturday.

The Golden Bears defeated Yorktown, 4-2, to close out the regular season with a 9-7 (3-4 HHC) record.

Van Wye’s first goal came early in the first half. Hannah Baker followed with a goal nearly 11 minutes later to give the Golden Bears the lead over the Tigers (8-7-1, 1-6 HHC).

Cassie Pike delivered the game-winning goal with three minutes left in the second half. That made it 3-2 and Van Wye added an insurance goal to complete the scoring.

Shelbyville begins postseason play Tuesday at the East Central Sectional against Richmond (9-5-2).

Nike XC Town Twilight Meet

Shelbyville finished 19th overall Friday at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute.

Shia Veach led the Golden Bears with an 18th-place finish out of 311 runners. He completed the course in 17 minutes, one second.

Also scoring for Shelbyville were Logan Reinhart (33rd in 17:28), Anderson Mollenkopf (147th in 19:23), Kendryk Pike (165th in 19:38) and Levi Harding (238th in 21:27).

Morristown’s Ryan Crisman crossed the finish line in 19:06 to finish 119th overall.

Shelbyville girls cross country team placed 15th led by America Leon-Torres’ 30th-place run in 21:15.

Also scoring for the Golden Bears were Aerin Garcia-Santiago (63rd in 21:53), Macey Robbins (80th in 22:26), Kat Seal (116th in 23:16) and Avery Keller (161st in 24:56).

Morristown sent three runners to Terre Haute. Audrey VanDyke finished 82nd in 22:28. Brooke Kuhn placed 147th in 24:21 and Gracie Theobald finished 216th in 28:39.

There were 239 finishers in the girls race.
