Prep Report: State-ranked Spartans defeat Trinity Lutheran in season opener

Jesse Wilkins’ two first-half goals were enough to get Class A, No. 9 Southwestern a season-opening win Monday over Trinity Lutheran, 4-1.

The Spartans got insurance goals in the second half from Landon Drake and Cecil Newton to secure the victory.

Ethan Sipes had two assists.

Chandler Holt (5 saves) and Jay Utley (3) combined for eight saves in goal.

John Harris scored his team’s only goal just inside the final 10 minutes of the first half.

Trinity Lutheran dropped to 1-1 this season.

Southwestern is at Shawe Memorial in Madison today.

Shelbyville 1, Martinsville 0

At Martinsville, Cassie Pike’s second-half goal was enough to get the Golden Bears a season-opening win.

Lucille Haacker preserved the shutout in goal for Shelbyville.

The Golden Bears are back in action Thursday at Franklin (1-0).

Boys tennis

Seymour 3, Waldron 2

At Waldron, the host Mohawks won both doubles matches but could not avoid getting swept in the singles matches to suffer their first loss of the season.

At No. 1 doubles, Jackson Kuhn and Caige Sheaffer defeated Shun Takeuchi and Max Payne in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.

Noah Mitchell and Connor Ping secured a 6-4, 6-3 win over Gage Hillian and Gus Henry at No. 2 doubles.

At No. 1 singles, Seymour’s Braylon Busby defeated Cash Young, 7-5, 6-3.

Lincoln Fischer lost at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-0 to Carter Stein.

And Dane Thompson blanked Owen Hartman at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0.

Ethan Moody won a junior varsity singles match for Waldron.

The Mohawks are at Madison today.

Volleyball

Triton Central def. Whiteland, 25-22, 25-23, 16-25, 19-25, 15-8

At Whiteland, the visiting Tigers won the first two sets before Whiteland found its rhythm to take the next two sets.

The Tigers recovered to win the final set and secure its first victory at Triton Central for new head coach Lyndsey Skipton.

Indian Creek def. Waldron, 25-20, 25-8, 25-9.

At Waldron, the visiting Braves dominated the second and third sets to secure the victory and improve to 2-0.

Waldron dropped to 1-1. The Mohawks are at Milan Thursday.
