Prep Report: Spartans, TC's Baker crowned county golf champions

Southwestern was crowned champion Thursday of the Shelby County Girls Golf Tournament.

Played at Timbergate Golf Course, the Spartans were the only team to field enough competitors for a team score. Morristown and Triton Central were incomplete. Waldron does not have a girls golf program.

Southwestern’s 267 was led by Kaylee Pike’s 60. Completing the scorecard were Izzy Andrews (67), Georgie Taggart (69) and Addalynn Johnson (71).

Triton Central’s lone golfer, Charlee Baker (photo), was the medalist with a round of 49.

Morristown was represented by Jorja Geise (64) and Jaylynn Geise (70).

In other prep events Thursday.

Girls golf

Shelbyville 201, New Palestine 223

At The Links Golf Club, Julie Garrison posted the low round of 42 to earn the medalist honor and lead the Golden Bears to a win over the Dragons.

Following Garrison on the Shelbyville scorecard were Hana Stenger (45), Sophia Bragg (57), Harper Adams (57), Lilly Huesman (63), Maddie Clapp (65) and Bri Chavez (68).

Boys soccer

Southwestern 4, Knightstown 1

At Knightstown, Landon Drake scored a goal in each half to spur the Spartans to the win.

Drake opened the scoring less than two minutes into the match.

Cannon Hunt tied the contest less than three minutes later.

Ethan Sipes produced the game winner for Southwestern (5-2-2) early in the second half. Drake added his second goal off an assist from Landon Fix.

Jay Brown closed out the scoring in the game’s final two minutes with his first goal of the season.

Chandler Holt was credited with four saves for Southwestern.

Knightstown dropped to 1-5-1.

Speedway 9, Shelbyville 1

At Speedway, the host Sparkplugs scored just 14 seconds into the Hoosier Legends Conference match, added four more goals in the first half and cruised to a win over the Golden Bears.

The Sparkplugs (5-4) maintained their lead atop the HLC standings at 4-0.

Tonny Avila scored the only goal for Shelbyville (3-7, 2-3 HLC).

Triton Central 2, Hauser 2

At Triton Central, the visiting Jets (6-2-1) scored twice in the second half to secure a tie against the Tigers.

Triton Central is 2-7-2 this season.

Girls soccer

Triton Central 5, Warren Central 0

At Warren Central, the Tigers scored a trio of first-half goals then preserved the shutout in the second half.

Rylee Pruitt scored twice and Maddie Burnett, Sydney Allen and Sarah Salazar-Montenegro also produced goals to improve the Tigers to 5-3 this season.

Warren Central dropped to 1-7 this season.

Boys tennis

Triton Central 3, Hauser 2

At Hauser, Triton Central’s No. 1 doubles pairing of Graham Gast and Cash Eck defeated Brady Miller and Ty Wadsworth, 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 to secure the team victory for the Tigers.

Triton Central also got singles victories from Bradyn Robinson and Drayton Kermode.

At No. 2 singles, Robinson defeated Joel Bechtel, 6-1, 6-4. Kermode cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles over Graydon Kilps.

Hauser’s Jordan Nieberg topped Brayden Hoover at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 6-2.

At No. 2 doubles, Triton Central’s Colton Ayres and Owen Rice retired before the first set was complete handing the win to Curtis Kilps and Aiden Bense.

Volleyball

Shelbyville def. Hauser, 25-11, 25-17, 25-18

At Shelbyville, Jordyn Noe finished with 10 kills, two service aces and nine digs to lead the Golden Bears over the Jets.

Taylor Abell had six kills, four aces and eight digs. Lyla Wilson had nine kills.

Setter Addy Marshall finished with 32 assists to push Shelbyville’s record to 7-5.

Freshman Sophia Baker topped the Jets (11-6) with seven kills. Fellow freshman Willow Hartwell had six kills. Hayden Dickey had a team-high 19 digs.

New Palestine def. Triton Central, 27-25, 25-16, 25-13

At Triton Central, Adelynn Crispin had eight kills and three aces to keep the Dragons unbeaten this season at 13-0.

Kennedy Armstrong had 11 assists and four aces. Emmi Robinson notched 12 digs and three aces.

Lucy May had a team-high seven digs for Triton Central (8-5). Kate Collier finished with seven digs and six kills.

Anna Kemper had 19 assists.

Waldron def. Eminence, 25-18, 25-8, 25-8

At Eminence, Abby Crouch and Ashlyn Ramsey combined for 27 assists to lead the Mohawks to the road victory. Ramsey also had 10 digs.

Maleah Williams led the attack with nine kills. Remi Hewson had six kills and Kailey Hinchman finished with five kills. 

Waldron has won three straight matches to improve to 7-5,
