Prep Report: Southwestern sophomore sinks 11 three-pointers in win over International

Southwestern sophomore guard Jay Utley set a new program record for made three-pointers in a game Monday against International.

Utley drained 11 3s on the way to a career-high 35 points to lead the Spartans to a 78-35 victory.

Utley sank four 3s in the opening quarter to help the Spartans (2-7) take a 23-5 lead.

Southwestern led 37-19 at halftime then Utley splashed four more 3s in the third quarter to extend the lead to 62-27.

Mitchell Clements finished with 12 points. Josh Karr had nine.

Michael Kreutz led the Gryphons (0-5) with 18 points.

Morristown’s junior varsity defeated Southwestern Monday, 44-22. Hunter Barrow led the victorious Yellow Jackets with 15 points.

Chandler Holt topped Southwestern with nine points.

Southwestern is at Brown County (3-8) Friday.

Hoosier Heritage Conference Meet

At New Palestine Saturday, Shelbyville’s Brody Jeanette produced a pair of fourth-place finishes at the Hoosier Heritage Conference meet.

 

 

Jeanette finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:52.69 – just 1.62 seconds behind event winner Carter Laduc of New Castle (1:51.07). Jeanette also placed fourth in the 500 freestyle in 5:10.05 – less than five seconds behind event winner Mason Stoughton of Greenfield-Central (5:05.76).

Also placing in the top 10 for Shelbyville were John Turner (seventh in diving, 258.45 points) and Anderson Mollenkopf (seventh in 100 backstroke, 1:03.07).

Mollenkopf also placed 12th in the 50 freestyle (24.5).

Everette Stegemiller finished 12th in the 100 butterfly (1:02.62) and Luca Kinker placed 12th in the 500 freestyle (5:25.83).
