Aiden Smith capped off Shelbyville’s 9-2 Hoosier Heritage Conference win Tuesday over Mt. Vernon with a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The victory improved the Class 3A, No. 9 Golden Bears to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the HHC standings.
Smith, a University of Kentucky recruit, had three hits, scored three runs and drove in five to get the Golden Bears to 4-0 for the first time since 2014.
On the mound, Smith improved to 2-0 with a 4-inning performance, limiting the Marauders to two hits and three walks while striking out seven.
Reece Prickett pitched the final three innings and allowed two hits while also striking out seven.
Drew Morgan took the loss for Mt. Vernon (5-2, 2-1 HHC). He pitched four innings and allowed two hits and three runs, all unearned.
Shelbyville scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and never trailed.
The HHC rematch is today in Fortville.

Triton Central 12, Beech Grove 10
At Triton Central, the Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to steal the Hoosier Legends Conference victory from the Hornets (5-1-1, 2-1 HLC).
Ty Bergman had two doubles and scored two runs for Triton Central (1-4, 1-2 HLC). Brayden Hoover had a home run and drove in three. Brody Hartman had two hits.
Hartman earned the win in relief, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing one hit and three runs (none earned).
Three different Beech Grove pitchers took the mound. Of the 12 runs allowed, only three were earned. Bishop Moore had two hits and three RBI. Guerin Boshears had three hits and scored two runs.
The Hornets host the Tigers today to complete the 2-game HLC series.
Waldron 17, Crothersville 2
At Crothersville, the visiting Mohawks scored in all five innings and broke the game open with a 7-run second inning.
Troy Atwood had three hits, including a double, scored four runs and drove in three for Waldron (3-2). J.D Smith had two hits and three RBI. Jackson Kuhn had two hits and scored two runs.
Brayden Smith earned the win. He allowed three hits and three walks while striking out seven in five innings.
Kaleb Moeller had two hits for Crothersville (0-4).
Waldron hosts Indiana Deaf (1-3) Friday.
Morristown 12, Providence Cristo Rey 4
At Providence Cristo Rey, the visiting Yellow Jackets scored 11 runs in the first inning to secure the win and improve to 2-4 this season.
Mitchell Ronan had three hits, including a double, scored three runs and had three RBI. Mason Bentley and Russ Kleine each drove in two runs.
Morristown hosts Daleville (2-3) Friday.
Boys golf
Shelbyville 163, Columbus East 181
At Greenbelt Golf Course in Columbus Monday, Shelbyville’s Logan Tobian was the medalist with the low round of 35.
Logan Reinhart (42), Ethan Hughes (43) and Brody Lee (43) each finished within one stroke of each other.
Also competing for Shelbyville were Lane Haehl (45), Kameron Holland (48) and Carter Dunagan (49).
Shelbyville hosts Franklin Thursday at Blue Bear Golf Course.
Softball
Shelbyville 13, New Castle 3
At New Castle, Shelbyville scored two runs in the top of the first inning then had to wait out a 47-minute weather delay before finishing off the Trojans (2-5, 0-2 Hoosier Heritage Conference).
June Murdick improved to 3-0 for the Golden Bears (5-5, 1-1 HHC). The junior allowed four hits and struck out six.
Gracie Crafton had three hits, including two doubles, and three RBI. Reagan Dillon and Hailey Maulden each drove in two runs.
The Golden Bears are at Delta (3-3, 1-0 HHC) Friday.
Knightstown 13, Morristown 1
At Morristown, the Panthers scored four runs each in the first and fourth innings to pull away from the Yellow Jackets.
Morristown (2-4) had just four hits in the loss.
Knightstown improved to 3-3.
Morristown is at Oldenburg Academy (0-6) Thursday.
Waldron 10, Oldenburg Academy 0
At Waldron, a 6-run second inning was enough for the Mohawks to tame the Twisters (0-6).
Kendall Beauer, Abby Crouch and Abigail Lockridge each had two hits for Waldron (3-1). Crouch and Kaylee Payne each drove in two runs.
Izzy Blanchard pitched four innings to earn the win. She allowed one hit and struck out seven. Kailey Hinchman pitched a scoreless inning and struck out three.
Triton Central 18, Beech Grove 8
At Triton Central, the visiting Hornets scored five runs in the top of the third inning to take the lead but the Tigers responded with a 6-run bottom half of the inning and never trailed again.
Freshman Elly May hit two home runs and drove in four to lead Triton Central (2-4, 2-1 HLC). Lily Sheler also had a home run and three RBI. The duo combined for seven hits in the win.
Hailey Cooper pitched into the fourth inning before being relieved by Riley Sheler. The pair limited Beech Grove (2-8, 1-2 HLC) to eight hits and struck out nine.
The Tigers are at Beech Grove today to complete the 2-game conference series.
Girls tennis
Triton Central 5, New Palestine 0
With Maryrose Felling’s three-set win at No. 1 singles over Arabella Deisher, the Tigers swept the Dragons. Felling was victorious, 6-4, 5-7, 10-8.
At No. 2 singles, Anniston Evans defeated Riley Watts, 6-4, 6-4. And Zhibek Zhumaly topped Macy Thomas, 6-1, 6-3.
At No. 1 doubles, Kate Collier and Neve Kahler won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, over Elliott Graham and Alyssa Beller.
Cadence Roberts and Estelle Gearlds defeated Alyssa Appleby and Addison Ballard, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.
Triton Central improved to 4-0.
Waldron 4, Southwestern 1
At Waldron, the lone Spartans’ win came at No. 2 doubles where Claire Utley and Macy Murray rallied to defeat Waldron’s Madeline Walker and Hannah Rouse, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Waldron’s Emerson Lindsey and Jackie Corlett bested Callie Beck and Hayden Ramey, 6-0, 6-1.
At No. 1 singles, Riley Thurston defeated Kelsey Stringer, 7-5 6-0.
Ava Leising produced a 6-1, 6-2 win over Saoia Villanueva at No. 2 singles.
Malia Murphy topped Paige Riggs at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-1.
Waldron remained unbeaten at 4-0.
Track and field
Shelbyville
Four Golden Bear boys won individual events Tuesday at McKeand Stadium in competition against Columbus East and Southwestern.
Shia Veach won the 1,600 meters in 4:49.08. Joaquin Delgado won the 110 hurdles in a personal best 15.77.
Noah Jones cleared nine feet for the first time to win the pole vault. And Ethan Griffin’s best discus throw of 138-6 won that event.
In the girls meet, five different Golden Bears won individual events.
Aerin Garcia-Santiago finished first in the 1,600 with a time of 6:11.66. America Leon won the 3,200 in 12:54.08.
Sonora O’Connor was fastest to the finish line in the 200 (27.01). Macey Robbins won the 400 in 1:02.95.
Haylee Barnes returned to competition and won the pole vault (7-0).
Shelbyville won the 400 relay (Mary O’Connor, Robbins, Sonora O’Connor, Amara Lewis) in 51.61; the 1,600 relay (Jordyn Noe, Lewis, Nevaeh Cole, Alyna Castanon) in 4:25.07; and the 3,200 relay (Castanon, Noe, Sonora O’Connor, Robbins) in 10:42.81.
Morristown
Morristown won the boys meet with 64 points. North Decatur was runner-up at 47 and Oldenburg Academy finished with 43.
Event winners for Morristown were Arik Trattner (18-6 in long jump; 11.2 in 100; 23.26 in 200), Trenton Belt (39-7 in shot put; 127-8 in discus), Brayden Anderson (56.07 in 400), and Lakshdeep Singh (2:16.45 in 800)
Morristown won the 400 relay with Gavin Wilson, Anderson, Brysen Wood and Trattner in 48.91.
Morristown held off North Decatur, 67-58, to win the girls meet. Oldenburg was third with 31 points.
Event winners for Morristown were Kamea Vaiagae (26-1 in shot put), Audrey VanDyke (6:12 in 1,600; 13:21.22 in 3,200), Anita Gesuale (1:05.88 in 400) and Brooklyn Carlton (51.59 in 300 hurdles),
Morristown won the 3,200 relay with VanDyke, Brooke Kuhn, Chloe Theobald and Ava Smith in 12:05.7.
The Yellow Jackets also won the 1,600 relay in 4:48 with Gesuale, Smith, Sawyer Rogers and Carlton.
