
Aiden Smith hit a pair of two-run home runs and three Shelbyville pitchers combined to get Shelbyville a 7-4 win Monday over Southport at Barnett Field.
Smith’s first home run in the first inning spotted the Golden Bears an early 2-0 lead.
The Cardinals (3-2) tied the game in the top of the second inning before Smith delivered again as part of a four-run third inning. Shelbyville (3-1) never trailed again.
Grantland Fitzgerald was credited with the win, working three innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out four. Austin Martzall and Brayden Smith combined to pitch four innings and allowed five hits and three runs.
Smith, a University of Kentucky recruit, finished with three hits, two runs scored and four runs batted in. Gavyn Fisher had two hits, including a double, and Brayden Smith drove in two runs.
Southport’s Nick Godsey had three hits in the loss, including two doubles.
The Golden Bears are at Mt. Vernon (2-2, 2-0 HHC) tonight.

At Blue Bear Golf Club in Shelbyville, Jake Garrison was the medalist with a 39 and his Shelbyville teammates Brock Wischmeyer and Logan Reinhart posted 40 and 41, respectively, to defeat the Olympians.
Completing the Golden Bears’ scorecard were Ethan Hughes and Logan Tobian, who each shot 44.
Triton Central Black 176, Triton Central White 190, Indianapolis Lutheran Inc.
At The Links Golf Club in New Palestine, Lutheran’s Caden Perkins (39) and Marc Mackay (40) carded the two best rounds but the Saints only had three players total.
Chase Chandler led TC Black to the team victory with a 41. Derreck Uhls followed with 42. Max Crouse (44) and Garrett Eberhardt (49) completed the scorecard.
Taggy Goul, Colton Ayres and Cael Butler each shot 46 for TC White.
Softball
Shelbyville 7, Pendleton Heights 5
At Pendleton Heights, a five-run fifth inning highlighted by Addie Stieneker’s two-run home run gave the Golden Bears a come-from-behind win in their Hoosier Heritage Conference opener.
Shelbyville (5-5) scored single runs in the first two innings off Pendleton Heights starting pitcher Ari Rector, but did not score again until the fifth inning.
The Arabians (3-3, 0-1 HHC) scored three runs in the first and two more times in the fourth to build a 5-2 lead.
Crafton (5-4) went the distance, allowing seven hits, three walks and two hit batters. She also had three hits along with freshman Julie Garrison.
Stieneker had two hits, scored two runs and drove in two.
Shelbyville hosts New Castle (3-1, 0-1 HHC) tonight.
Triton Central 5, Eastern Hancock 2
At Eastern Hancock, a three-run second inning proved enough run support for Lillian Fillippinie, who allowed six hits and struck out 14 in a complete-game performance.
Madison Collins had two hits and scored two runs for Triton Central (3-1). Madi Peterson had two RBI.
Eastern Hancock dropped to 2-5.
Triton Central hosts Heritage Christian (2-3) Thursday.
Girls tennis
Triton Central 3, Shelbyville 2
At Triton Central, the host Tigers won two singles matches and got a dominant performance at No. 1 doubles to secure the win over the Golden Bears (2-1) — a potential sectional opponent.
At No. 1 doubles, Estelle Gearlds and Kate Collier defeated Shelbyville’s Megan Childres and Ava Van Wye, 6-0, 6-0.
Triton Central’s Maryrose Felling bested Ava Muckerheide at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2.
And at No. 3 singles, Triton Central’s Ellie Gast topped Corinne Aldridge, 6-2, 6-3.
Shelbyville’s lone singles win came at No. 2 singles where Sophia Asher defeated Anniston Evans, 6-4, 6-4.
In the only three-set match Monday, Shelbyville’s Kylie Stader and Abigail Huntsman outlasted Neve Kahler and Caydence Stout, 3-6, 7-6 (2), 10-7.
Triton Central improved to 3-0.
Boys volleyball
Shelbyville defeated Indianapolis Washington, 25-11, 25-14, 25-21
At Garrett Gymnasium in Shelbyville, Corbin Deck collected eight kills, six service aces and 11 digs to improve the Golden Bears to 3-7.
Drake Tillison finished with seven kills, two aces and 11 digs. Setter Layne Pogue notched two kills, eight aces, nine digs and 15 assists.
Shelbyville hosts Greenwood (4-7) Thursday.
