Shelbyville volleyball got off to a slow start Wednesday night against visiting Connersville and dropped a four-set match, 25-18, 25-17, 22-25, 25-18.
The Golden Bears fell to 0-5 this season
Connersville (4-4) raced out to an 11-0 lead in the opening game before the Golden Bears settled in and attempted a comeback that fell short. A more even start to the second game did not change the outcome.
Shelbyville stayed consistent throughout the third game and pulled away in the end for the win but could not keep the Spartans from prevailing in the fourth game.
The Golden Bears are 8-62 in their last 70 matches dating back to the end of the 2021 season.

The Golden Bears had straight-set wins at No. 1 singles, No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles to secure their first Hoosier Heritage Conference win of the season.
At No. 1 singles, Reece Prickett defeated Silas Carder, 6-0, 6-0. Kody Sellers produced the No. 3 singles win over Noah Kelley, 6-3, 6-3.
At No. 1 doubles, Aiden Smith and Wyatt Armstrong cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Seth Cooper and Camden Gilliam.
Yorktown’s Reid Butts needed three sets to defeat Kashton Laycock at No. 2 singles, 7-6, 0-6, 14-12.
At No. 2 doubles, Tyler Koss and Connor Tinch bested Shelbyville’s Owen Hartman and Jack VanWye, 6-2, 6-0.
Shelbyville improved to 2-6 (1-0 HHC).
Junior varsity match winners for Shelbyville were Drake Tillison and the doubles team of Aiden Alton and Cooper Reed.
