Prep Report: Shelbyville's Veach runs personal best to win 3,200 at Warren Central

Shelbyville sophomore Shia Veach ran the fastest 3,200 meters of his life and won the event Friday at the Dennis McNulty Invitational, hosted by Warren Central.

Veach (photo) dropped 17 seconds from his previous personal best time and crossed the finish line in nine minutes, 57.57 seconds.

Freshman Macey Robbins produced the best finish for Shelbyville’s girls track team. She ran 1:01.66 in the 400 meters to finish sixth overall.

Other place winners for Shelbyville were the 400 relay team of Jorge Jauregui, Logan Page, Trell Garner and Christian Powell; the 1,600 relay team of Powell, Page, Eli Davis and Blake Hughes; the 400 relay team of Diana Gasca, Jordyn Noe, Koli Adkins and Amara Lewis; and the 1,600 relay team of Alyna Castanon, Noe, Gasca and Robbins.

Baseball

Whiteland 7, Shelbyville 1

At Barnett Field in Shelbyville, the visiting Warriors (6-5) used a 4-run second inning to create distance and Peyton Dickens and Blake Lyle combined to toss a no-hitter.

Dickens pitched five innings and allowed no hits and one walk while striking out nine. Lyle pitched a scoreless final two innings.

Reece Prickett took the loss for Shelbyville, allowing eight hits and five runs in the first two innings.

Hauser 6, Waldron 5

At Waldron, Hauser’s Simeon Wasil limited the Mohawks to three hits and two walks while striking out 15 to lead the Class A, No. 3 Jets to the victory in game one of a Mid-Hoosier Conference doubleheader.

Waldron tied the game in the top of the fourth with hits from Troy Atwood, Jordan Bennett and Hunter Dodson, but did not score again.

Dodson limited Hauser to just five hits in the loss.

Hauser 6, Waldron 5

The Jets built a 6-0 lead in game two then held off the Mohawks until inclement weather forced the doubleheader to be complete.

Waldron (3-5, 1-3 MHC) scored twice in the fourth and three times in the fifth to get within 6-5 but darkness and a thunderstorm ended the game early.

Bennett took the loss despite throwing well, limiting Hauser (7-3, 6-0 MHC) to three hits. At the plate, he delivered a two-run home run in the fifth inning.

Softball

Shelbyville 12, Columbus East 9

At Shelbyville, the Golden Bears won a rain-shortened slugfest with the Olympians (4-6).

On Senior Night, three of Shelbyville’s four seniors bashed home runs while freshman Julie Garrison had two doubles and four runs batted in.

Anna Shearer, Kali Laycock and Addison Stieneker each homered in the win.

Gracie Crafton benefited from the run support to get the win despite allowing 12 hits, four walks and hitting two batters. Seven of the nine runs were earned.

Raegyn Foster took the loss for Columbus East, allowing six hits, six walks and eight runs before turning the pitching duties over to Jacque Boroughs.

Shelbyville improved to 9-6.

Girls tennis

Pendleton Heights 3, Shelbyville 2

At Shelbyville, the Golden Bears got singles victories from Ava Muckerheide and Sophia Asher.

At No. 1 singles, Muckerheide improved to 6-1 this season with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sarah Ghosh. Asher pushed her record to 7-0 at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Sophia Sorrells.

Pendleton Heights’ No. 2 doubles pairing of Adri Martin and Alayna Eichorn needed three sets to defeat Shelbyville’s Kylie Stader and Abby Huntsman and secure the Hoosier Heritage Conference victory.

Boys volleyball

Indianapolis Lutheran def. Shelbyville, 25-16, 25-12, 25-10

At Lutheran, the host Saints got 12 kills and four service aces from Abush Rolfsen to defeat the Golden Bears (5-11).

Biak Hleithawang had a team-high 12 digs and Noah Alexander finished with 23 assists for Lutheran (9-5).
