Prep Report: Shelbyville's Tobian wins HHC golf championship

Shelbyville's Brock Wischmeyer (left) and Logan Tobian earned All-Conference honors Saturday at The Players Club in Muncie.

Shelbyville and Pendleton Heights each shot 315 Saturday to finish tied atop the Hoosier Heritage Conference Tournament leaderboard.

The fifth player’s score became the tiebreaker and Pendleton Heights prevailed with the HHC championship.

At The Players Club in Muncie, Mt. Vernon finished third at 327, ahead of New Palestine (333), Yorktown (338), New Castle (340), Greenfield-Central (345) and Delta (354).

Shelbyville’s Logan Tobian was the HHC champion with a 74. Brock Wischmeyer was four shots back at 78 and also earned All-HHC honors for Shelbyville.

 

Shelbyville tied Pendleton Heights for the best team score Saturday at the HHC Tournament but were declared runner up after the tiebreaker was applied. Playing for Shelbyville were (from left): Jake Garrison, Logan Reinhart, Brock Wischmeyer, Logan Tobian and Ethan Hughes.

 

Completing the Golden Bears’ scorecard were Logan Reinhart (81), Jake Garrison (82) and Ethan Hughes (93).

Baseball

Shelbyville 10, Rushville 7

At Rushville Saturday, the Golden Bears scored four runs in the fourth and three times in the sixth to secure the come-from-behind victory over the Lions.

Grantland Fitzgerald, Aiden Smith and Dalton Jones each had three hits for Shelbyville (14-7). Smith had a double and a home run and drove in two runs. Jones had three RBI.

Reece Prickett earned the win on the mound, pitching four innings in relief of starter Gavin Reed and limiting the Lions to one hit and no runs.

Grant Cameron had two hits and drove in two runs for Rushville (3-13).

Shelbyville, winners of six straight, plays its final Hoosier Heritage Conference games this season beginning Tuesday at home against Greenfield-Central (12-10, 8-3 HHC).

North Decatur 11, Southwestern 1

At North Decatur Friday, Matthew Fields and Grayson Downey each had three hits while Xander Jones scored two runs and drove in five to get the Chargers the Mid-Hoosier Conference win.

Kamdenn McKinney allowed three hits and struck out eight to improve North Decatur to 11-8 (7-3 MHC).

The Spartans dropped to 6-7 (6-5 MHC).

Southwestern hosts Class A, No. 2 Knightstown (18-3) Monday.

Waldron 6, Morristown 3

At Waldron Friday, a four-run third inning helped the Mohawks secure the MHC sweep.

Troy Atwood had two hits and three RBI for Waldron (6-12, 4-6 MHC).

Charlie Fischer pitched four shutout innings to earn the win. He allowed one hit and struck out seven.

Morristown dropped to 6-12 (3-6 MHC). The Yellow Jackets host Class A, No. 7 Hauser (12-3, 9-0 MHC) Monday.

Waldron hosts Edinburgh (6-13, 1-9 MHC) Monday.

Boys golf

Batesville 145, Triton Central 157

At North Branch Friday, Batesville posted four scores below 39 in the two-man scramble format.

Max Crouse and Sam Collier combined to shoot 38 and lead Triton Central. Garrett Eberhardt and Jackson Faust posted 39.

Softball

Shelbyville 3, Charlestown 1

Jennings County 6, Shelbyville 5, 8 inn.

At Jennings County Saturday, Kali Laycock delivered a two-run base hit in the third inning and the pitching duo of Gracie Crafton and Sydney Brown kept the Pirates in check.

Crafton pitched into the fifth inning before Brown took over and secured the final five outs for the save. Crafton allowed two hits and struck out nine going through the batting order twice.

Brown allowed two hits and the only run then shut down Charlestown (14-7), who lost to Jennings County, 5-1, in the round robin opener.

Shelbyville fell behind 4-0 to Jennings County but scored twice in the fourth and got a three-run double by Destiney Johnson in the fifth to take the lead.

The Panthers scored a run in the seventh and had the winning run at third base but Crafton, who pitched all eight innings and took the loss, got a line drive double play to end the threat.

The Golden Bears got the leadoff runner on base in the seventh and eighth innings but failed to score.

Jennings County (14-10) pushed a run across in the eighth for the walkoff victory.

The Golden Bears (16-10, 4-2 HHC) travel to Greenfield-Central (12-7, 4-2 HHC) Monday with the winner securing a third-place finish in the conference standings.

Morristown 17, Waldron 3

At Waldron Friday, Mykynzy Smith had four hits and three RBI to lead Morristown. Abby Hawk drove in three and pitched a five-inning complete game, striking out 10.

Alexis Rogers had two doubles and scored a run for Waldron (0-9, 0-5 MHC). The Mohawks host Edinburgh (14-10, 4-4 MHC) Monday.

Morristown (8-9, 5-4 MHC) is at Hauser (8-5, 7-0 MHC) Monday.

Girls tennis

Triton Central 4, Indianapolis Lutheran 1

At Triton Central Friday, the visiting Saints’ only win came at No. 1 singles where Cat Erwin defeated Cadence Roberts, 6-3, 6-1.

Anniston Evans and Ellie Gast won in straight sets at No. 2 singles and No. 3 singles, respectively.

Triton Central’s doubles teams lost just one game in sweeping their matches in straight sets.
