Prep Report: Shelbyville's Smith and Armstrong, Southwestern's Beck advance in postseason tennis tournament

Inclement weather forced the postponement of the Center Grove Regional semifinal tennis matches Tuesday.

Those matches have been moved to today. Waldron takes on Roncalli and Connersville battles Center Grove.

The individual sectional round of singles and doubles matches were moved indoors to the University of Indianapolis.

Shelbyville's No. 1 doubles pairing of Aiden Smith and Wyatt Armstrong (photo) improved to 23-1 this season with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Perry Meridian's Fulton Jones and Vansui Thang.

Southwestern's Kyle Beck (photo) scored a hard-fought first set win then finished off Southport's Steven Thang, 7-6 (8), 6-4, to advance in the tournament.

The Golden Bears and Spartan will await the results of the regional team pairings at Center Grove before learning their next opponents.

Boys soccer

Indianapolis Lutheran Sectional

Morristown 3, Knightstown 0

At Lutheran, the Yellow Jackets scored three goals in the first half then shut out the Panthers (1-12-3) to advance to the semifinal round tonight.

Morristown (5-8-2), winners of four of its last six matches, takes on the host Saints (6-9-1) at 7 p.m. tonight. Lutheran defeated Central Christian Academy on Tuesday, 2-0.

In the other semifinal match today, No. 3 Greenwood Christian Academy takes on Christel House.

Whiteland Sectional

The semifinal round of the sectional is now set.

At 6 p.m. tonight, Shelbyville (6-10) takes on Whiteland (8-9).

Columbus North (7-4-5), a 2-1 winner over Franklin Tuesday, follows against Center Grove (8-6-3), who eliminated Columbus East, 4-2.

Girls soccer

East Central Sectional

Richmond 3, Shelbyville 2

At East Central, the Golden Bears took an early 1-0 lead, but the Red Devils tied the match at halftime and scored two more goals before the halfway mark of the second half to secure the sectional victory.

Ali Coleman had a goal and an assist for Richmond (10-5-2). Harlow Flanagan and Valeria Morales also scored goals.

With the win, Richmond advanced to the semifinal round of the sectional Thursday to face New Palestine (10-3-2).

Shelbyville closed out its season at 9-8.

Monrovia Sectional

Triton Central (10-4-2) learned its sectional semifinal round opponent will be Brown County.

The Eagles (5-4-2) defeated Greenwood Christian Academy, 4-1, Tuesday at Monrovia High School.

The Tigers and Eagles will play Thursday at 5 p.m.

In Wednesday's other quarterfinal matches, No. 12 Monrovia (13-3) battles Indianapolis Washington and Hauser (3-11-1) takes on Providence Cristo Rey (1-10).

Volleyball

New Palestine def. Shelbyville, 25-9, 25-12, 25-9

At Garrett Gymnasium, Hayden Ramsey had 12 kills and Azure Flagle finished with 21 digs to improve the visiting Dragons to 25-4 this season.

Shelbyville (10-16) played its final Hoosier Heritage Conference match and finished 1-6 in the standings.

The Golden Bears celebrated two milestones Tuesday.

Junior setter Addy Marshall (photo, second from left) earned her 1,000th career assist.

Shelbyville returns to action Thursday at Garrett Gymnasium against Warren Central (7-15).
