Prep Report: O'Connor sets new school record to lead Shelbyville to Golden Bear Invitational championship

With two relay wins and first-place points in five more individual events, Shelbyville's girls track and field team captured its first-ever Golden Bear Invitational championship Thursday at McKeand Stadium.

The Golden Bears amassed 133 points to defeat Indianapolis Cathedral (102), Seymour (100), Perry Meridian (76), Columbus North (58) and Speedway (51).

Sonora O’Connor won the long jump competition and became the first Golden Bear to surpass 17 feet to set a new school record. On her last attempt, O’Connor soared 17 feet, 2.5 inches to break the old mark of 16-10.5 set in 2018 by Megan Eads.

O’Connor also won the 300 hurdles in 46.7 seconds.

Jordyn Noe was a double winner, taking first place in the 100 hurdles (15.88) and high jump (5-2).

Macey Robbins crossed the finish line first in the 800 (2:25.48).

Shelbyville’s 3,200 relay team of America Leon, Alyna Castanon, Aerin Garcia-Santiago and Robbins took first place in 10:16.36.

Noe, Robbins, Castanon and O’Connor won the 1,600 relay in 4:11.49.

Also scoring top three finishes for Shelbyville were Amara Lewis (third in 100 in 13.07), Castanon (third in 400 in 1:04.05), O’Connor (second in 100 hurdles in 16.15), Haylee Barnes (third in pole vault at 7-0) and Mary O’Connor (third in long jump at 15-6).

Mary O’Connor, Noe, Wuraola Ogunmoyela and Lewis finished second in the 800 relay in 1:50.75.

Shelbyville finished fourth in the boys’ team standings. Seymour won the title with 130 points. Perry Meridian (110) was runner-up ahead of Cathedral (96), Shelbyville (82), Columbus North (62) and Speedway (43).

Shelbyville had two event winners: Joaquin Delgado (16.63 in 110 hurdles) and Ethan Griffin (46-5.5 in shot put).

Griffin also was runner-up in the discus (129-4).

Eli Davis was runner-up in the 300 (53.36).

The quartet of Alex Wells, Davis, Trell Garner and Kamden Turner finished runner-up in the 800 relay (1:35.36).

Davis, Wells, Shane Owens and Turner finished third in the 1,600 relay (3:37.04).

Baseball

South Decatur 2, Waldron 0

At South Decatur, Corey Nugent and J.P. Scudder combined to throw a two-hit shutout to secure the Mid-Hoosier Conference victory.

The Cougars (10-3, 5-0 MHC) scored single runs in the second and sixth innings to stay unbeaten in MHC games this season. Nugent earned the wins, pitching six innings and striking out 13.

Waldron (6-7, 2-2 MHC) hosts North Decatur (6-6, 5-1 MHC) Tuesday.

Morristown 18, Edinburgh 0

At Morristown, the Yellow Jackets scored 13 runs in the third inning to seize control of the MHC game.

Cole Helton had three hits, including a double, and scored three runs. Braxton Lenning had two hits and drove in two runs. Mason Bentley drove in two runs.

Jake Miesse earned the win, allowing one hit and no runs over four innings. He struck out 10.

Morristown (5-6) hosts Bethesda Christian (8-6) Monday.

Boys golf

Triton Central White 177, Monrovia 194, Triton Central Green 214

At The Links, Max Crouse was the medalist with the low round of 41 to lead the Tigers to the win.

Also playing for Triton Central were Hayden Beaver (44), Colton Ayres (44), Ryder Trimble (48), Chance Uhls (54) and Devon Gurganus (56).

Corbin Beaver led Triton Central Green with a 45.

Batesville 153, Shelbyville 184

At Bear Chase, Logan Tobian led Shelbyville with a 41.

Ethan Hughes and Kameron Holland followed with 47s. Brody Lee shot 49.

Softball

New Palestine 11, Shelbyville 0

At Shelbyville, the Dragons scored twice in the first inning which was enough for Sadey Hughbanks to collect the Hoosier Heritage Conference win. The Marian commit allowed four hits and struck out four to improve Class 3A, No. 5 New Palestine to 10-4 (3-1 HHC).

Callie Cromwell had three hits and scored two runs. Payton Dye, a North Carolina State commit, and Cara Steele each had solo home runs.

Gracie Crafton took the loss for Shelbyville (9-8, 2-3 HHC).

Shelbyville is at Whiteland (9-5) Monday.

South Decatur 14, Waldron 3

At South Decatur, Lyndsey Shireman had three hits, scored two runs and drove in two runs to lead the victorious Cougars. Lilly Murray, Lily Huey and Raegan Benge each had two hits. Murray finished with four RBIs.

Brooklyn Rush and Abigail Lockridge each drove in runs for Waldron.

The Mohawks (5-5) are at Oldenburg Academy (0-10) Monday.

Edinburgh 13, Morristown 4

At Morristown, Kenna Streeval had a double and a triple and scored four runs to lead the Lancers to the MHC win over the Yellow Jackets. Adalyn Ramey drove in four runs.

Streeval, an Eastern Kentucky commit, pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and four walks while striking out 11.

Sawyer Rogers had four hits and scored three runs.

Morristown (5-6) is at Greenwood Christian (3-2) Monday.

Girls tennis

Southwestern 3, Morristown 2

At Southwestern, the Spartans won both doubles matches and got a victory at No. 2 singles by Saioa Villanueva to secure the win.

Callie Beck and Hayden Ramey won at No. 1 doubles. Claire Utley and Maci Murray were victorious at No. 2 doubles.

Morristown got singles match wins from Katie Theobald and Remi Frey.

Blue River Valley 3, Waldron 2

At Blue River Valley, Waldron’s No. 1 doubles pairing of Emerson Lindsey and Jackie Corlett improved to 10-0 this season with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Bekah Grim and Ziranda Grounds.

Waldron’s only other win came at No. 3 singles where Leah Kuhn defeated Emma Jo Dunsmore, 6-4, 6-0.

At No. 1 singles, Blue River Valley’s Sydney Crisp bested Riley Thurston, 6-1, 6-0.

Kenna Sheets defeated Hannah Rouse at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-4.

At No. 2 doubles, Grace McDonald and Alayna Connor topped Madeline Walker and Taylor Stewart, 6-2, 7-6 (6).
