Prep Report: Murdick pitches gem to get Shelbyville first win

June Murdick’s first start in the circle for Shelbyville was terrific. The Triton Central transfer limited Speedway to one hit to secure the Golden Bears’ first victory of the season, 10-0 at home Thursday.

Murdick (photo) pitched all five innings in the run-rule victory and only allowed four Sparkplugs to reach base. The junior finished with six strikeouts.

After getting shut out in their first two games, Shelbyville (1-2) scored in four of the five innings against Speedway (1-1).

Reagan Dillon had four hits in the leadoff position, including three doubles. She scored twice and drove in four runs.

Waldron transfer Alexis Rogers had three hits, including one of six Shelbyville doubles in the 13-hit performance.

Murdick also had two hits and drove in two runs, including the final run that ended the game.

Hayli Clampitt took the loss for Speedway. She allowed seven hits and seven runs before being relieved in the third inning.

Shelbyville is at Columbus North (1-1) Thursday before playing four games in two days in Evansville at the Castle Invitational April 10-11.

Baseball

Greenwood Christian 21, Morristown 0

At Greenwood Christian, the host Cougars used a 13-run second inning to secure a season-opening win over the Yellow Jackets.

Liam Cunningham drove in four runs for Greenwood Christian (1-0). Cruze Hurley scored three runs and had four RBI.

Three Cougar pitchers limited Morristown to one hit and recorded nine strikeouts.

Karter Rogers had the lone hit for Morristown. Landon Rinzel started on the mound and took the loss.

Softball

Morristown 7, Brown County 6, 9 inn.

At Morristown, the Eagles scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning but the Yellow Jackets countered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to send the game to extra innings.

Brown County (0-2) again took the lead in the top of the ninth but Morristown scored two to secure the win. Abby Berling, Chloe Longwell, Avery Everhart, and Abby Hawk each had two hits in the win. Berling had two doubles and drove in three runs.

Hawk went the distance in the circle to earn the win. She allowed four hits and two walks while striking out 13.

New Palestine 20, Triton Central 0

At Triton Central, the visiting Dragons scored nine runs in the first inning and cruised to a season-opening victory over the Tigers.

Saydie Miller had four hits, including two home runs, scored three runs and drove in five.

Madi Peterson took the loss for Triton Central. She allowed five hits and nine runs but only three were earned.

Boys track and field

Shelbyville 85, Speedway 46

At Shelbyville, Kamden Turner, Shia Veach and Ethan Griffin each won two events to lead the Golden Bears.

Turner finished first in the 400 meters (54.48 seconds) and the pole vault (nine feet). Veach won the 800 in 2:17.03 and the 1,600 in 4:50.17. Griffin had the top throws in the discus (143-9) and the shot put (49-10.25).

Also winning events were Joaquin Delgado (16.13 in 110 hurdles) and Eli Davis (5-6 in high jump).

The Golden Bears also won the 1,600 relay (3:42.93) with Turner, Davis, Alex Wells and Shane Owens and the 3,200 relay (9:30.19) with Eden Ortega, Logan Addis, Anderson Mollenkopf and Veach.

Girls track and field

Shelbyville 88, Speedway 34

At Shelbyville, Jordyn Noe scored first-place points in three events to lead the Golden Bears past the Sparkplugs.

Noe won the 100 hurdles (16.24), 300 hurdles (50.36) and the high jump (4-10).

Sonora O’Connor was the fastest in the 200 (27.08) and the 400 (1:01.67).

Also winning events were Amara Lewis (13.08 in the 100), America Leon (5:50.58 in the 1,600), Macey Robbins (2:34.72 in the 800), Aerin Garcia-Santiago (13:24.13 in the 3,200), Madalyn Bolin (83-2 in discus) and Taylor Abell (27-9 in shot put).

The quartet of Robbins, Leon, Garcia-Santiago and Alyna Castanon took first place in the 3,200 relay (10:36.17).
