Triton Central got a goal from Rylee Pruitt in the first four matches of the girls soccer sectional championship Saturday night at Class A, No. 12 Monrovia and trusted its stifling defense to carry the way.
That nearly worked but Trinity Inglert converted a penalty kick with 54 seconds left in regulation to send the match into overtime where neither team scored in the two 7-minute sessions.
That sent the championship to penalty kicks where again the Tigers struck first.
After two failed rounds of penalty kicks, Maddie Burnett converted to give Triton Central a 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs finally beat Triton Central goalkeeper Cheyenne Allen in the fourth round to tie it up again at 1-1.
And after Triton Central missed on its fifth and final penalty kick, Nellie Standeford beat Allen to her left at the far post for the win.
The sectional championship was the fourth in a row for Monrovia (16-3). The Bulldogs will host No. 1 Oldenburg Academy (18-0-1) Thursday at 6 p.m. in a regional semifinal contest.
Triton Central finished its season at 11-5-2.
