Prep Report: Late rally nets Waldron baseball win at Southwestern

Waldron scored all six of its runs in the final two innings to steal a 6-2 victory Thursday at Southwestern.

Jordan Bennett had three hits for Waldron (3-2, 1-0 Mid-Hoosier Conference). Jackson Kuhn finished with a double and two runs batted in.

Bennett went the distance on the mound, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out six.

Isaac Bunch took the loss for Southwestern. The senior pitched six innings and allowed five hits and six runs, only one was earned. He also notched 12 strikeouts.

Chris Cecil had a run-scoring double for Southwestern (2-2, 2-1 MHC).

The Mohawks and Spartans meet again today at Waldron.

Boys golf

Franklin 157, Seymour 157, Shelbyville 168

At The Legends Golf Club, the sixth player score for Franklin was the tiebreaker to get the Grizzlies the win over the Owls.

Shelbyville’s Logan Tobian was the match medalist with a 37. Jake Garrison was one shot back at 38.

Abe Botkin (38) and Matthew Ferguson (39) broke 40 for Franklin. Zarick Black (38) shot under 40 for Seymour.

Southwestern 217, Morristown 228, Edinburgh 229

At Timbergate Golf Course in Edinburgh, Southwestern had two golfers break 50 to lead the Spartans to the match victory.

Josh Karr led Southwestern with 46. Eli Smith followed with 49.

Completing the Southwestern scorecard were Landon Fix (60) and Cecil Newton (61).

Eli Graves led Morristown with a 48. Also competing were Kellen Crim (52), Kilyn Gaines (62) and Jacob Hawk (65).

Edinburgh’s Trenton Schmidt was the medalist with a 45.

Indian Creek 162, Triton Central 166

At Tameka Woods Golf Course in Trafalgar, Indian Creek’s Isaac Spurgeon edged out Triton Central’s Chase Chandler for the medalist honor with a 38. Chandler shot 39.

Also for Indian Creek, Uriah Scott and A.J. Emenheiser each shot 40 while Rhys Shand followed with 44.

Also on the Triton Central scorecard were Max Crouse (42), Colton Ayres (42) and Derreck Uhls (43).

Softball

Triton Central 10, Heritage Christian 0

At Triton Central, Brylie Couch tossed a five-inning perfect game to lead the Tigers to their fourth-straight victory.

Couch, a Trine University commit, did not allow a hit or walk and struck out 12 of the 15 batters she faced.

Madi Peterson (4 RBI), Lillian Fillippinie and Ashlyn Hittle combined to drive in eight runs.

Heritage Christian dropped to 2-5.

Triton Central (4-1) is at Indianapolis Scecina (0-5) Tuesday.

Girls tennis

Triton Central 5, Morristown 0

At Morristown, the visiting Tigers lost just eight games while sweeping the Yellow Jackets.

At No. 1 singles, Maryrose Felling defeated Bri Flores, 6-0, 6-2.

Anniston Evans produced a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Katie Theobald at No. 2 singles.

Ellie Gast bested Addie Osborne, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

At No. 1 doubles, Neve Kahler and Estelle Gearlds defeated Zoey Coons and Emmy Bowyer, 6-1, 6-1.

Caydence Stout and Kate Collier swept Maile Vitz and Emma Wagoner at No. 2 doubles, 6-0, 6-0.

Triton Central improved to 4-1.

Boys volleyball

Shelbyville def. Greenwood, 16-25, 25-18, 13-25, 25-16, 15-8

At Shelbyville’s Garrett Gymnasium, the Golden Bears won the final two sets to improve to 4-7.

Drake Tillison (21 kills) and Corbin Deck (17) combined for 38 kills to lead Shelbyville, winners of four of its last six.

Deck finished with a match-high 32 digs. Tillison had 22 digs and Jay Kawakami collected 17.

Setter Layne Pogue finished with 36 assists and 18 digs.

Grant Westrick led Greenwood (4-9), losers of six straight, with nine kills.

Shelbyville is at Mooresville (5-5) tonight.
