Prep Report: Golden Bears repeat as Shelbyville Invitational champions

The Golden Bears earned back-to-back Shelbyville Tennis Invitational titles with wins Saturday over Franklin and East Central Saturday.

Shelbyville defeated Franklin, 4-1, with Bram Kolkmeier needing a third-set tiebreaker to win at No. 2 singles and complete the match scoring.

At No. 1 singles, Kashton Laycock defeated Oliver Wiltz, 7-5, 6-1. Kolkmeier bested Corbin Booth, 1-6, 6-3, 10-2.

At No. 1 doubles, Jack Van Wye and Cooper Reed topped David Strait and Vincent Flowers, 6-4, 6-4.

Owen Shively and Grant Tackett defeated Conner Alsip and Christian Lamb at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-3.

Franklin’s only win came at No. 3 singles where Caleb Shoup defeated Shelbyville’s Kody Sellers, 6-1, 6-2.

Shelbyville swept East Central, 5-0.

Laycock, Kolkmeier and Sellers each won in straight sets.

Sellers defeated Kyle Kaeser, 6-2, 7-6 (1).

Kolkmeier improved to 11-2 this season with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Owen Vollmer.

Both of Shelbyville’s doubles teams won in straight sets. Shively and Tackett pushed their record at No. 2 doubles to 10-3 this season.

The Golden Bears improved to 8-5 this season.

Girls golf

Mid-Hoosier Conference Tournament

At North Branch Golf Course, North Decatur captured the conference tournament title. Mary Spier was crowned conference champion with the low round of 45 to lead the victorious Chargers.

North Decatur’s 217 held off Hauser, who finished at 219. Brown County was third at 235 and Southwestern placed fourth at 259.

Edinburgh, Morristown and South Decatur did not have enough golfers to complete a team score.

Boys soccer

Southwestern (Shelby) 2, Southwestern (Hanover) 1

Landon Drake and Ethan Sipes erased a 1-0 deficit Friday with first half goals to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead at halftime.

Chandler Holt did not allow a second half goal to improve Southwestern to 6-2-2 this season.

The Rebels dropped to 0-4-1.

Tri-West 8, Triton Central 0

The host Bruins scored four goals Saturday in each half to improve to 4-4 (3-1 Hoosier Legends Conference).

Triton Central dropped to 2-8-2 (2-2 HLC).

Girls soccer

Tri-West 7, Triton Central 1

At Tri-West Saturday, Kaydence Steffey scored three goals to help the Bruins secure the HLC victory.

Genevieve Tooley scored twice and Hadley Pickens and Makenna Peters each scored a goal to improve Tri-West to 9-1 (5-0 HLC).

Layla McKee had the lone goal for the Tigers (5-4, 3-2 HLC).

Volleyball

Southwestern Invitational

Shelbyville rolled through four opponents to earn the invitational championship.

The Golden Bears defeated Irvington Prep (25-6, 25-7), Waldron (25-21, 25-16), Oldenburg Academy (28-26, 25-21) and Southwestern (25-9, 25-10) to improve to 11-5 this season.

In the champions, Jordyn Noe finished with a team-high six kills. Lyla Wilson and Maggie Kolkmeier each had five kills.

Hayden Ricketts finished with 14 digs.

Wilson, Noe and Kolkmeier combined for 21 kills against Oldenburg Academy.

Bryleigh Heller had a team-high eight digs against Waldron.

Ricketts finished with four service aces and seven digs against Irvington Prep.
