
Aiden Smith and Reece Prickett combined to keep New Palestine in check and earn Shelbyville baseball a season-opening win Tuesday over the Dragons, 4-3.
Smith, a University of Kentucky recruit, worked the first four innings at Barnett Field in Shelbyville and allowed three hits and one walk while striking out eight. The Dragons managed just one unearned run off the right-hander.
Prickett pitched the final three innings, allowed four hits and two runs (one earned) to earn the save and get Shelbyville a Hoosier Heritage Conference victory.
Smith had a double and drove in two runs at the plate. Dalton Jones also drove in a run with sacrifice fly.
Rigg Mahurin took the loss for New Palestine (1-1), pitching 4.2 innings and allowing five hits, two walks and all four Shelbyville runs. Ajay Kropp closed out the game and did not allow a hit or run.
The Golden Bears and Dragons meet again today in New Palestine to complete the HHC series.

Triton Central 13, Beech Grove 0
At Beech Grove, Hayden May allowed one hit and struck out 11 to lead the Tigers to a season-opening victory over the Hornets.
May, a Vincennes University commit, worked 5.2 innings and did not allow a run. Hayden Beaver secured the final two outs on the mound without allowing a hit.
May also had two hits and three RBI.
Bryce Haney had five hits and drove in five runs.
The Tigers and Hornets are scheduled to meet again today in the second game of a two-game Indiana Crossroads Conference series.
Oldenburg Academy 3, Waldron 1
At Liberty Park in Batesville, Jacob Stenger scattered three Waldron hits to get the Twisters a season-opening win over the Mohawks (0-1).
Jordan Bennett allowed one hit over five innings and struck out eight for Waldron. Hunter Dodson allowed one hit and one run in one inning of relief work.
The Mohawks are at South Ripley Friday.
Jac-Cen-Del 12, Southwestern 5
At Southwestern, the host Spartans scored all five runs in the second inning but allowed the Eagles six runs in the third and never regained the lead.
Neil Sullivan earned the win for Jac-Cen-Del, pitching 4.1 relief innings, allowing no hits and no runs. Brody Huff started but did not get out of the second inning when the Spartans scored five unearned runs.
Sullivan also had two extra-base hits and drove in five runs. Huff had a double and three RBI.
Southwestern (0-1) used six different pitchers in the loss.
Landon Drake had two hits and James Oliver drove in two runs.
Southwestern hosts South Decatur Thursday.
Greenwood Christian 14, Morristown 1
At Morristown, Brandt Kieninger and Caden Camden combined to allow just one hit and one run to the host Yellow Jackets.
Kieninger struck out eight in three innings. Camden had two hits and five RBI.
Morristown (0-1) hosts North Decatur Thursday.
Softball
Shelbyville 7, Bloomington North 3, 8 inn.
At Bloomington North, after surrendering a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning, the Golden Bears scored four runs in the top of the eighth to secure their third win of the season.
Addie Stieneker drove in a pair of runs in the extra inning and finished with three hits. Destiney Johnson, Julie Garrison and Sydney Brown each had two hits.
Gracie Crafton (3-1) went the distance in the pitcher’s circle, allowing six hits and striking out 10.
Kendyl Feutz took the loss for Bloomington North (1-2). The senior allowed 11 hits and six walks while striking out four.
Shelbyville (3-1) hosts Columbus North (0-2) Thursday.
Girls tennis
Shelbyville 5, Morristown 0
At Morristown, the visiting Golden Bears (2-0) won all five matches in straight sets.
At No. 1 singles, Ava Muckerheide defeated Katie Theobald, 6-1, 6-0.
Sophia Asher improved to 2-0 this season with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Bri Flores.
And Corinne Aldridge collected a No. 3 singles win over Addie Osborne, 6-0, 7-5.
At No. 1 doubles, Megan Childres and Ava Van Wye bested Emmy Wagoner and Emmy Bowyer, 6-2, 6-0.
Kylie Stader and Emmie Higgins finished the sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Zoey Coons and Maile Vitz at No. 2 doubles.
Shelbyville’s Macy Larrison defeated Morristown’s Amerie Helton, 8-0, in a junior varsity match.
Shelbyville is at Triton Central Monday.
Track and field
Shelbyville at Franklin
Shelbyville’s lone event winner for the girls program was Macey Robbins in the 800 meters (2:37.15).
Securing runner-up finishes were Aerin Garcia-Santiago (800, 2:42.4; 1,600, 5:55.73) and Jordyn Noe (high jump, 4-8).
In the boys meet, Shelbyville event winners were Ethan Griffin (discus, 101-7), Jaylen Eads (pole vault, 11-6) and the 1,600 relay team of Isaac Zermeno, Christian Powell, Logan Page and Blake Hughes, who finished in 3:34.9.
Runner-up finishers included Page (200, 23.58; high jump, 5-6), Shia Veach (1,600, 4:41.13), Joaquin Delgado (110 hurdles, 17.46), Kamden Turner (pole vault, 9-0) and Anthony Stafford (shot put, 38-4).
Due to inclement weather, the 3,200, the 100, 400, 400 relay and 3,200 relay were not held.
Boys volleyball
Shelbyville def. Beech Grove, 25-19, 25-23, 25-12
At Beech Grove, the straight-set sweep netted the Golden Bears (1-6) their first win of the season.
Beech Grove dropped to 1-4.
Shelbyville hosts Whiteland (1-5) Thursday at Garrett Gymnasium.
