Prep Report: Eight area cross country runners qualify for Shelbyville Regional

Five Golden Bears secured regional berths Saturday in the IHSAA cross country sectional held at Blue River Memorial Park in Shelbyville.

The top five teams and the top 15 individuals not on an advancing team qualified for the regional also to be held at the cross country venue in Shelbyville.

Shelbyville’s Shia Veach (16:59) and America Leon-Torres (21:24) each finished 15th overall in their respective races to earn All-Sectional honors.

They will be joined at the Shelbyville Regional by Logan Reinhart, who finished 33rd (17:44) in the boys race, and Macey Robbins (29th in 22:20) and Kat Seal (44th in 23:23).

The Golden Bears finished ninth in the team standings in both events.

Also running for Shelbyville in the boys race were Kendryk Pike (58th in 19:21), Anderson Mollenkopf (61st in 19:31), Eden Ortega (69th in 20:08), Everett Stegemiller (85th in 22:24) and Alex Wells (90th in 27:21).

Southwestern finished 13th in the team standings. Representing the Spartans were Chris Claiborne (70th in 20:12), Jackson Bentz (84th in 22:02), Samuel Wilson (87th in 24:25), Maxmilian Wilson (88th in 24:45) and Jayden Thurston (91st in 28:50).

Waldron’s Jackson Kuhn finished 59th in 19:27 and Triton Central’s Max Tupper placed 86th in 22:40.

Completing the roster for Shelbyville in the girls race were Aerin Garcia-Santiago (48th in 23:50), Avery Keller (58th in 25:07), Claire Kamplain (67th in 27:26) and Haylee Barnes (68th in 27:40).

Waldron’s Kassidy Meulen finished 59th in 25:16; Triton Central’s Audrey Morris finished 69th in 27:58; Southwestern’s Kyndra King placed 72nd in 29:30; Triton Central’s Reese Kelley was 73rd in 29:58; and Southwestern’s Adalyn Brewer finished 75th in 32:10.

 

 

At the Mt. Vernon Sectional, Morristown’s Ryan Crisman (38th in 18:24), Lakshdeep Singh (41st in 18:31) and Audrey VanDyke (33rd in 22:00) qualified for the Shelbyville Regional.

Also competing for Morristown at the sectional were Evan Trittipo (85th in 24:28), Brooke Kuhn (56th in 24:36) and Gracie Theobald (68th in 27:56).

Boys tennis

North Central Regional

Southwestern’s Kyle Beck lost his regional semifinal singles match to Richmond’s Alexander Harrick, 6-0, 6-1.

Harrick (19-1), a freshman, suffered the first loss of his high school career to Indianapolis Chatard’s Casey Beckmann, 6-1, 6-1, in the regional championship match.

Mt. Vernon senior Bryndan Wylie and Tate Cougill avenged a Hoosier Heritage Conference loss earlier this season with a 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-2 win over Shelbyville’s Aiden Smith, a senior, and Wyatt Armstrong, a junior.

Smith’s career ended with a 78-26 doubles record, three sectional titles, a regional championship and a state finals appearance in 2023.

The Marauders defeated Seymour’s Shunsuke Takeuchi and Braylon Busby in the regional championship match, 0-6, 6-1, 7-6 (3).
