Prep Report: Crim leads Yellow Jackets to MHC win over Edinburgh

Morristown grabbed a double-digit lead after one quarter Friday against Edinburgh and never let the Lancers mount a comeback.

Kellen Crim hit three three-pointers in the opening half and finished with a game-high 21 points to lead the Yellow Jackets to a 56-41 win. The junior guard also had five assists, five steals and four rebounds.

Morristown improved to 11-4 overall and 3-1 in the Mid-Hoosier Conference standings. The Yellow Jackets have won six of their last seven games.

Owen Rinzel scored 12 points and added six rebounds and four steals against the Lancers. Brayden Anderson and Brody Smith each finished with nine points. Smith had a team-high 10 rebounds.

Bailey Totten led Edinburgh (4-11, 1-5 MHC) with 13 points.

Morristown is at South Decatur (10-3, 2-1 MHC) Thursday and Eminence (10-4) Saturday.

Boys basketball

Southwestern 58, Herron 52

At Southwestern Saturday, Cecil Newton hit 8 of 10 free throw attempts and made two 3s on the way to a game-high 24 points to help the Spartans avenge an earlier season loss to the Achaeans.

Jay Utley finished with 17 points and Landon Drake added eight for the Spartans (4-10).

The game was tied at halftime. Newton scored 13 points in the third quarter to get his team a 45-40 lead going into the fourth.

The Spartans made 7 of 9 free throws over the final eight minutes and finished 20 of 27 from the line in the game.

Jaden Parker led Herron (3-11) with 17 points. Elijah Smith and Jeffery Allen each had 12 while Josiah Clark finished with 10.

Herron won the junior varsity game, 58-55. Chandler Holt made seven 3s and led Southwestern with 31 points.

The Spartans host Class A, No. 3 Hauser (13-2) Thursday.

Oldenburg Academy 51, Waldron 39

At Oldenburg Saturday, Matthew Belt scored a game-high 27 points to improve the Twisters to 7-9 this season.

Oldenburg Academy led 30-22 after three quarters. Belt scored 14 in the final quarter to offset the Twisters making just 4 of 10 free throws.

Connor Holder finished with 11 points.

Eli Stewart scored eight points in the fourth quarter and ended with a team-high 15 points. No other Mohawk scored more than six.

The loss dropped Waldron to 9-6. The Mohawks are at North Decatur (6-11) Thursday.

Waldron 63, Southwestern 34

At Waldron Friday, Ethan Moody scored a game-high 17 points while Caige Sheaffer, Luke Myers and Matthew Campbell combined for 26 points to get the Mohawks the MHC win.

A 5-point third quarter doomed the Spartans. Waldron led 27-22 at halftime and extended the lead to 42-27 after three quarters.

Cecil Newton led Southwestern with 11 points.

Waldron won the junior varsity game, 53-32. Kevin Crouch led the Mohawks with 20 points. Leland Riddle topped Southwestern with nine points.

Girls basketball

Pendleton Heights 66, Shelbyville 40

At Shelbyville Friday, the host Golden Bears cut an early deficit to 36-28 by halftime but got outscored 14-6 in the third quarter and never recovered.

Adah Hupfer scored a game-high 20 points to improve Class 4A, No. 10 Pendleton Heights to 19-3 this season. With the win, the Arabians also secured the outright Hoosier Heritage Conference championship with a 7-0 record.

Olivia Jones finished with 19 and Ellie Warfel added 14.

Jayla Ash scored 13 points to lead Shelbyville (12-9, 3-4 HHC) in its final HHC game. The Golden Bears will join the Hoosier Legends Conference next season.

Shelbyville will make its postseason debut Friday at Class 3A, Sectional 28 in the first semifinal contest. The Golden Bears await the quarterfinal winner between Indian Creek (10-13) and Rushville (3-21).

Waldron 61, Milan 28

At Waldron Friday, Emerson Lindsey and Grace Fischer combined to score 39 points to lead the Mohawks to a win in their regular-season finale.

Lindsey hit six 3s and finished with a game-high 23 points. Fischer hit three 3s and scored 16. Brooklyn Milbourn also reached double digits with 10 points.

Waldron jumped out to a 16-9 lead after one quarter and extended the advantage to 26-12 at halftime.

Lexi Hagga led Milan (3-18) with eight points.

Waldron (7-11) is the host school for Class A, Sectional 59. The Mohawks host Tri (14-7) in the second quarterfinal game Wednesday.

Brown County 44, Southwestern 36

At Southwestern Friday, a strong second quarter propelled the Eagles past the Spartans in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Brown County (3-20) held a 10-7 lead after one quarter then outscored Southwestern 11-3 in the second quarter to build a double-digit lead by halftime.

Bryla Dunbar led the Spartans with nine points. Hayden Ramey had eight points.

Southwestern (3-18) travels to Waldron Tuesday to face Edinburgh (12-9) in the first game of Class A, Sectional 59.
