Prep Report: Class 2A, No. 11 Triton Central closing in on ICC title

Class 2A, No. 11 Triton Central moved one game closer to clinching the Indiana Crossroads Conference title with a 5-3 win Thursday over Class A, No. 4 Indianapolis Lutheran.

The Tigers (15-4, 11-0 ICC) scored three runs in the top of the first inning off Lutheran starter Hudson Mills and carried a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

Bryce Haney allowed four hits and two walks while striking out six. The Saints (11-8, 8-3 ICC) scored three unearned runs in their final at bat.

Bo West reached base three times for Triton Central and scored three runs. Weston Smith drove in two runs.

The Tigers are at Heritage Christian (12-6) today.

Baseball

Shelbyville 6, New Castle 2

At Shelbyville, Gavin Reed had three hits and Gavyn Fisher and Brayden Smith each drove in two runs to help the Golden Bears sweep a two-game series with the Trojans (5-16, 0-12 Hoosier Heritage Conference).

Dalton Jones earned the win, scattering six hits and two walks over six innings on the mound. Reece Prickett pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

Shelbyville (13-7, 7-5 HHC), winners of nine of its past 10 games, is at Rushville (3-10) Saturday.

North Decatur 6, Southwestern 1

At Southwestern, Matthew Fields scattered four hits and two walks while striking out nine to lead the Chargers to the Mid-Hoosier Conference win.

North Decatur (9-8, 6-3 MHC) scored twice in the second and three times in the third to seize the lead. Xander Jones had two doubles and scored two runs. Eli Trenkmap had two hits and two RBI.

Isaac Bunch took the loss for Southwestern (6-6, 6-4 MHC). He allowed nine hits and struck out four.

The Spartans finish their two-game MHC series today at North Decatur.

Morristown 4, Waldron 3

At Morristown, the visiting Mohawks scored three runs early but could not put away the Yellow Jackets.

Jordan Bennett went the distance for Waldron (5-12, 3-6 MHC), surrendering three hits and three walks. Only two of Morristown’s four runs were earned.

Bennett and Jackson Kuhn each had three hits. J.D. Smith drove in two runs.

The Yellow Jackets (6-11, 3-5 MHC) are at Waldron today.

Softball

Westfield 15, Shelbyville 7

At Westfield, the visiting Golden Bears built an early lead behind Addie Stieneker’s two-run home run, her 11th of the season, but could not keep the Shamrocks off the scoreboard.

Mackenzie Delph scattered seven hits and struck out 11 over six innings to earn the win for Westfield (11-9).

Gracie Crafton pitched into the third inning and took the loss for Shelbyville (15-9).

Stieneker had four hits and scored three runs. Destiney Johnson finished with three hits and scored two runs.

Shelbyville and Charlestown (14-5) travel to Jennings County (11-10) Saturday for a round robin invitational.

Girls tennis

Triton Central 5, Lawrenceburg 0

Triton Central won all five matches in straight sets to improve to 16-1 this season.

Victorious in singles matches were Maryrose Felling (6-4, 6-0), Anniston Evans (6-4, 6-2), and Ellie Gast (6-4, 6-2).

Neve Kahler and Kate Collier won at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-2.

Estelle Gearlds and Caydence Stout win at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-1.

On Wednesday, Triton Central defeated Whiteland, 4-1.

Gast won a three-set match at No. 3 singles over Alexa Lee, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Gearlds and Stout also needed three sets to defeat Chloe Sui and Mia Kuchaes, 6-7(4), 6-4, 10-2.

Felling (6-0, 6-1) and the pairing of Kahler and Collier (6-1, 7-5) won in straight sets.

At No. 2 singles, Rowan Starns defeated Evans, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 10-7.

Batesville 4, Waldron 1

At Batesville, Waldron’s only win came at No. 1 singles where Riley Thurston bested Ava Walsman, 6-3, 6-2.

Lucy Abplanalp defeated Waldron’s Ava Leising, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.

The Mohawks forfeited the No. 3 singles match.

At No. 1 doubles, Waldron’s Emerson Lindsey and Malia Murphy lost to Molly Meer and Annie Negovetich, 6-3, 6-1.

Grace Walker and Kate Bauer defeated Waldron’s Lillian Mann and Madeline Walker at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-2.

Boys track

Hoosier Heritage Conference Meet

At Mt. Vernon, Shelbyville had four top-6 finishes.

Joaguin Delgado finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.81 seconds). Blake Hughes was sixth in the 400 (52.15).

Jaylen Eads placed fifth in the pole vault (11 feet, six inches). And Anthony Stafford finished fifth in the shot put (43-2).
