Prep Report: Center Grove tops Triton Central in tennis regional championship match

Center Grove swept Triton Central Wednesday to capture the tennis program’s 23rd regional championship.

The No. 17-ranked Trojans won all five matches in straight sets.

At No. 1 singles, Sloane Small pinned the only loss of the season on Triton Central’s Maryrose Felling, 6-2, 6-0.

Kenna Harbin defeated Anniston Evans at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-4.

Alejandra Arriz bested Ellie Gast, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 3 singles.

At No. 1 doubles, Val Arriz and Paisley Carter topped Neve Kahler and Kate Collier, 6-1, 6-1. The loss was the first this season for the Tigers’ top doubles pairing.

Ashley Embrey and Maggie Teed defeated Caydence Stout and Estelle Gearlds, 6-2, 6-2.

Center Grove will host No. 18 Columbus North Saturday in a semistate championship match.

In the sectional round of the state doubles tournament Wednesday at Center Grove, Southwestern’s Tanna Tatlock and Tori Burkhart were defeated by Roncalli’s Evie Eble and Sammie Kegerries, 6-3, 6-1, to end their season.

Baseball

Heritage Christian Sectional

Triton Central 19, Irvington Prep 0

Bryce Haney twirled a 3-hit shutout and struck out 11 Ravens in the sectional opener for Triton Central (18-5).

Haney also had two hits and drove in five runs to advance the Tigers to Saturday’s semifinal round at Heritage Christian.

Kellan Dishman had two hits and drove in three while Kail Slaughter, Janssen Capps and Weston Smith each had two RBI.

The Tigers scored five runs in the first inning to take control then extended the lead in the fourth with seven more runs.

Cortez Jenkins had two hits for Irvington Prep (19-7).

Triton Central will face Indianapolis Scecina (9-16) at 1 p.m. Saturday in the first semifinal contest. The Crusaders lost a pair of Indiana Crossroads Conference games to the Tigers in late April, 12-0 and 12-2.

In the other semifinal Saturday afternoon, Heritage Christian (17-6) battles Eastern Hancock (9-14-1).

The Class 2A, Sectional 43 championship game is set for noon Monday at Heritage Christian.

Morristown Sectional

Knightstown 13, Waldron 1

The Mohawks drew the unenviable task of facing Class A, No. 3 Knightstown in the sectional opener.

The game was tied 1-all going to the bottom of the third when the Panthers erupted for eight runs to take control of the sectional contest.

Carson Bonham had two triples and drove in three runs for Knightstown (21-4). Jadyn Page scored two runs and had two RBI.

Bonham pitched the first four innings to earn the win. The sophomore allowed one hit and three walks while striking out five. Andrew Buchanan pitched a scoreless fifth inning to close out the win.

Jordan Bennett took the loss for Waldron (8-13).

Knightstown returns to Morristown Saturday for a 2 p.m. semifinal game against the host Yellow Jackets.

Morristown 5, Edinburgh 1

The Yellow Jackets scored three times in the first inning and added two more runs in the third to get the sectional win over the Lancers.

Avynn Whitaker took the loss for Edinburgh (7-16). The senior allowed four hits and five walks while striking out 10. Whitaker had a double that drove in the Lancers’ lone run.

Morristown (7-15) will host Knightstown Saturday at 2 p.m.

Quarterfinal games today at Morristown are Tri (2-18-1) taking on South Decatur (7-11) and Southwestern (8-8) battling North Decatur (14-9).

Softball

Tri Sectional

South Decatur 13, Morristown 6

A six-run first inning by South Decatur put Morristown in chase mode and the Yellow Jackets never recovered.

Riley Benge had four hits, scored three runs and drove in four to lead the Cougars (11-10). Samantha Cole had two hits and two RBI. Raegan Benge had two doubles and scored two runs.

Riley Benge scattered 10 hits and eight walks to earn the win in the circle.

Mykynzy Smith had three hits and scored three runs for Morristown (10-11). Avery Everhart had four hits. Chloe Longwell drove in two runs.

South Decatur advanced to Saturday’s sectional championship game where it will face the host Titans (20-5).
