Prep Report: Beech Grove topples Triton Central to capture share of HLC title

Beech Grove raced out to a 14-5 lead after one quarter Thursday and Class 2A, No. 8 Triton Central never recovered.

Olivia Stowers scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Hornets to a 53-42 victory and clinched a share of the inaugural Hoosier Legends Conference championship with 2A No. 12 Monrovia.

Triton Central (18-4, 3-2 HLC) trailed 23-12 at halftime before increasing the offensive pace in the third quarter. Kate Collier scored seven of her team-high 17 points in that quarter, but the Hornets (14-8, 4-1 HLC) still outscored the Tigers, 20-17.

Beech Grove hit just 5 of 11 free throws in the final quarter, and 8 of 20 in the game, but still prevailed.

Samarah Turner had 10 points for the Hornets.

Layla Compton had eight points for Triton Central. Quinn King finished with seven.

Triton Central won the junior varsity game, 38-11. Maddie Burnett led the Tigers with 13 points.

Triton Central now prepares for the postseason. The Tigers open Sectional 43 play Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. against Irvington Prep (1-14).

In other girls basketball games Thursday:

Edinburgh 45, Waldron 28

At Edinburgh, the host Lancers outscored the Mohawks 23-8 in the middle two quarters to secure the Mid-Hoosier Conference victory.

Edinburgh (12-9, 4-2 MHC) led 14-12 after one quarter then extended the lead to 23-14 and 37-20 at the next two quarter breaks.

Kenna Streeval led the Lancers with 12 points and five steals. Kinzie Purvis finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

Waldron lost its third straight game to fall to 6-11 (1-5 MHC). The Mohawks close out the regular season schedule tonight at home against Milan (3-17) at 6 p.m. in a varsity-only contest.

Waldron’s boys basketball team will host Southwestern as well with the JV game at 6 p.m. in the junior high school gymnasium. The boys varsity game will follow the girls varsity game.

Edinburgh will travel to Waldron Tuesday for a Class A, Sectional 59 game against Southwestern (3-17).

Knightstown 46, Morristown 29

At Knightstown, the Panthers and Yellow Jackets previewed their Sectional 59 contest next week at Waldron.

Knightstown improved to 14-6 with the win. The Yellow Jackets slipped back to .500 at 10-10.

The two teams play at Waldron Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
