Shelbyville senior Riley Everette will return to the IHSAA State Championships — and compete in two events.
Everette (photo) won the 100-yard butterfly Saturday at the New Palestine Sectional in a sectional championship record time of 56.69 seconds. The time also lowered her own school record in the event.
Everette nearly secured a second sectional title in the 50 freestyle. Her time of 24.38 left her .03 behind race winner Salah Vahle of Greenfield-Central. Everette’s time was fast enough to get her a berth in the event at the state finals which begin Friday at the Indiana University Natatorium in downtown Indianapolis.
Everette also helped Shelbyville score a runner-up finish in the 200 freestyle relay and a third-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay.
In the 200 freestyle relay, she teamed with Meeghen Bushfield, Naomi Garringer and Paige Bohman to finish second in 1:45.75.
Everette, Garringer, Bohman and Anne Marie Fansler placed third in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:00.09.
Fansler finished 10th in the 200 freestyle (2:15.45).
Bushfield (26.55) and Bohman (26.73) placed seventh and eighth in the 50 freestyle.
Bushfield also competed in the 100 butterfly sectional championship race and placed sixth (1:06.56).
Bohman finished seventh in the 100 freestyle in 1:00.02. Garringer was 10th (1:01.1).
Garringer placed sixth in the 100 backstroke (1:09.18).

Chloe Claxton (photo) finished fourth (300.30 points) in the diving competition to advance to Tuesday’s Plainfield Regional. She will need a top eight finish there to advance to the state finals.
