Collegiate Update: Valdez part of record-setting win for IU Columbus soccer

Shelbyville graduate Rebecca Valdez was part of a recent record-setting performance for the IU Columbus women’s soccer program.

Valdez (photo) scored two goals Wednesday in a 14-0 win over Alice Lloyd College (Ky.). The win was the first of the season for IU Columbus.

The win set program records for most goals in a game, largest win margin, and three players recording hat tricks (3 goals in a game). The hat tricks were the first for the program.

The Crimson Pride earned a second win Sunday, 2-0 over Eureka College to improve to 2-2-1 this season.

Here is a look at other Shelby County graduates competing at the collegiate level.

Vivian Blye

The Triton Central graduate played 19 minutes and had one shot attempt on Sept. 9 for Huntington University in a 6-1 win at IU Kokomo.

Blye logged 16 minutes Saturday in a 4-1 loss to Olivet Nazarene (Ill.).

Huntington is 4-3 this season.

Ellie Simpson

The Shelbyville graduate played all 90 minutes in two wins for IU East women’s soccer.

On Wednesday, the Red Wolves defeated Anderson, 2-1. On Saturday, IU East won 3-0 at Earlham College to improve to 3-3-1 this season.

Axel Conover

The Shelbyville graduate had four total tackles (3 solo) for Hanover in a 16-7 loss Saturday to Butler.

Hanover is 0-2 this season.

Brayden Wilkins

The Triton Central graduate had 55 yards of total offense Saturday in Franklin College’s 38-14 loss to No. 18 Hope.

Wilkins carried the ball five times for 13 yards, had two catches for 14 yards and two kickoff returns for 28 yards.

Franklin is 1-1 this season.

Shelby Lasure

The Shelbyville graduate finished with one assist and two digs Wednesday for Anderson volleyball in a 25-17, 25-9, 25-20 win over Wilmington (Ohio).

The Ravens improved to 5-2.

Christian Powell

The Shelbyville graduate finished 51st overall for Franklin College cross country Saturday at the Hanover Invitational.

Powell crossed the finish line in 26 minutes, 25 seconds.

Asher Caldwell

The Morristown graduate rallied to finish tied for fourth place on Sept. 9 for Trine in the Ken Venturi Invitational at Zollner Golf Course in Angola, Ind.

Caldwell overcame a pair of double bogeys with four birdies on the back nine, and six birdies in the round, to shoot a 1-under-par 70.

Oliver Gearlds

The Triton Central graduate secured a top 10 finish on Sept. 9 in the Pretty Lake Intercollegiate in Plymouth, Ind.

Held at Pretty Lake Golf Club, Gearlds, competing for IU Kokomo, opened the three round event on Sept. 8 with an 81 (+9). He followed that with rounds of 73 (+1) and 71 (-1) for a score of 225 (+9).

IU Kokomo finished fifth in the event.
