Collegiate Update: Gearlds helps IU Kokomo to fourth-place finish at Midway Eagle Invitational

Oliver Gearlds posted identical rounds of 78 to help IU Kokomo finish fourth at the Midway Eagle Invitational.

Played March 30 and March 31 at the University Club in Lexington, Kentucky, the Triton Central graduate finished +6 each day for a two-day score of 156 to place 19th in the field.

Here is a look at other Shelby County graduates competing at the collegiate level.

Kylee Edwards

The Shelbyville graduate became the first player in LSU history to hit for the cycle Friday at Missouri. Edwards had four hits – a single, double, triple and home run – and drove in four runs in the Tigers’ 16-4 win over Missouri.

On Thursday, Edwards had a home run and drove in two runs in LSU’s 9-1 win at Missouri.

Karissa Hamilton

The Shelbyville graduate drove in the only run Tuesday in Kentucky’s 1-0 win at Miami (Ohio).

On Thursday, Hamilton drove in Kentucky’s only two runs in a 10-2 loss at Oklahoma.

She had a double Friday in a 9-1 loss to the Sooners.

Brooke Lipperd

The Shelbyville graduate had two hits, scored two runs and drove in two runs Thursday in Franklin College’s 16-7 win at Sewanee.

Franklin is 15-5 this season.

Cheyenne Eads

The Shelbyville graduate improved to 18-1 this season with a pair of wins last week for No. 8 Indianapolis.

Eads allowed seven hits and struck out five in an 11-3 win Tuesday over Purdue Northwest. On Saturday, she allowed two hits and struck out  nine in the Greyhounds’ 12-1 win at Truman in Kirksville, Ohio.

In game two of the doubleheader at Truman, Eads had a 3-run home run to complete the sweep, 10-3.

The Greyhounds are 36-2 this season.

Brayden Basey

The Shelbyville graduate had three hits, scored a run, drove in a run and stole a base Friday for Christian Brothers in a 13-6 loss to Mississippi College.

Charlie Rife

The Shelbyville graduate reached base twice and had a home run Tuesday for Bellarmine in a 15-12 win at Northern Kentucky.

The Knights are 13-17 this season.

Dalton Jones

The Shelbyville graduate had a home run and drove in three runs Tuesday for Olney Central College in a 17-6 loss to John A. Logan College.

Corbin Deck

Franklin College men’s volleyball finished its second season of competition with a four-set loss Saturday at Westminster (Missouri). The final score was 19-25, 25-16, 25-14, 25-18.

Shelbyville graduate Corbin Deck finished with five kills and eight digs for Franklin.

Franklin’s final week started Tuesday at Defiance with a 25-21, 25-22, 17-25, 25-23 loss. Deck had eight kills, one block and six digs.

The Grizzlies traveled to Fulton, Missouri, for a Friday match with Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Franklin lost that match, 25-16, 25-20, 25-12. Deck had six kills and six digs.

Before facing Westminster, Franklin lost a 5-set match to Greenville, 25-9, 21-25, 25-27, 25-16, 15-8. Deck had one kill and two digs.

Franklin finished 6-23.

Track and field

Four Shelby County graduates represented Franklin College Saturday at the Manchester Invitational.

Brayden Wilkins, a Triton Central graduate, finished eighth in the 100 meters in a time of 11.39 seconds. He also was part of Franklin’s 400 relay team that placed fourth (43.69).

Logan Page, a Shelbyville graduate, finished 22nd in the 100 (11.59), fourth in the high jump (5-8.75) and joined with Wilkins on the 400 relay team.

Blake Hughes, a Shelbyville graduate, finished seventh in the 400 (52.81) and 14th in the 200 (23.82).

Christian Powell, a Shelbyville graduate, placed 17th in the 200 (24.21).
