Collegiate Update: Edwards named All-SEC First Team for LSU

Shelbyville graduate and LSU shortstop Kylee Edwards was named to the All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) First Team based on her performance this season.

She is hitting .344 with 10 home runs, 35 runs batted in and 39 runs scored. Defensively, she leads LSU with 96 assists and has only committed three errors.

LSU was defeated in its opening game of the SEC Tournament at the University of Kentucky Wednesday, 7-3. Edwards went 0-for-3 in the loss and had a walk.

 

 

On Sunday, LSU learned it is the No. 16 national seed for the NCAA Tournament, which begins Friday. The Tigers will host a regional that includes Akron, Virginia Tech and South Alabama.

LSU takes on Akron Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Here is a look at other Shelby County graduates competing at the collegiate level:

Brayden Wilkins

The Triton Central graduate broke the Franklin College record in the 100 meters and the 200 meters Friday at the Sycamore Open in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Wilkins clocked 10.61 seconds in the preliminary heat of the 100 to lower his own school record by two tenths of a second. He returned for the final and ran 10.72 to finish fourth in the field.

Wilkins was runner-up in the 200 at 21.41, also breaking his own school record.

Cheyenne Eads

The University of Indianapolis learned Monday morning it will be competing for the 18th consecutive season in the NCAA Division II Softball Championship.

The Greyhounds (56-5) were named the top seed in the Midwest and will host the first of two Midwest Regionals beginning Thursday.

Indianapolis will face Tiffin Thursday. The other two teams in the regional are Saginaw Valley and Ashland. The Greyhounds have wins this season over Tiffin and Ashland.

Eads, a Shelbyville graduate, improved to 29-2 this season with a 7-2 win over Drury Friday in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament in East Peoria, Illinois. She pitched four innings and allowed five hits and two runs while striking out three.

The Greyhounds were eliminated from the tournament by Rockhurst, 12-0, later Friday. Eads pitched in relief, allowing six hits and two runs. She had two hits at the plate.
