Collegiate Update: Eads, Greyhounds finish one win short of World Series appearance

The Greyhounds fell one win short of reaching the NCAA Division II World Series.

After the splitting two games with Saginaw Valley, the two teams played a third game to determine the series winner.

Saginaw Valley prevailed 6-5 Friday to bring an end to the University of Indianapolis’ season.

Shelbyville graduate Cheyenne Eads pitched into the sixth inning for Indianapolis, allowing seven hits, five walks and four runs. She did not factor into the decision.

Eads (photo) also had a double and scored a run in the loss.

On Thursday, Saginaw Valley won game one, 3-1. Eads took the loss, allowing six hits and all three runs.

The Greyhounds bounced back Friday, winning game two, 9-0. Eads pitched a 1-hit shutout and struck out four to improve her record to 26-12.

Indianapolis finished the season with a 42-22 record.

Here is a look at other Shelby County graduates competing at the collegiate level.

Katie Mathies

DePauw was eliminated from regional competition Friday with a second loss to Simpson.

The Tigers opened the regional Thursday with 9-5 loss to Simpson in Winona, Minnesota. Mathies, a Shelbyville graduate, drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.

DePauw defeated Husson, 3-0, Friday to set up a rematch with Simpson. Mathies had three hits and a walk in the win.

Simpson won its second meeting with DePauw, 8-3. Mathies, who was named North Coast Athletic Conference First Team earlier in the week, had a hit and drove in a run.

The Tigers finished the season at 25-15.

Kylee Edwards

The Shelbyville graduate had three hits for Mississippi State at the Texas Tech Regional.

The Bulldogs defeated Washington, 6-3, Friday. Edwards had a double and drove in two runs.

On Saturday, Texas Tech defeated Mississippi State, 10-1. Edwards finished 0-for-2 at the plate with a walk.

In a rematch with Washington Saturday night, the Bulldogs survived, 11-10. Edwards had two hits and drove in a run.

Texas Tech then defeated Mississippi State, 9-6, Sunday to end the Bulldogs’ season.

Mississippi State finished 39-19 this season.

Charlie Rife

The Shelbyville graduate helped Bellarmine sweep a three-game series against Eastern Kentucky.

On Thursday, Rife was hit by a pitch, scored a run and drove in a run in Bellarmine’s 8-6 win.

Rife hit a solo home run and had a sacrifice fly Friday in a 10-3 win. 

The Knights completed the sweep Saturday, 10-9. Rife hit a solo home run, his sixth of the season.

Bellarmine improved to 17-38 overall and 11-19 in Atlantic Sun Conference games.
