and Joann Marie (Hubble) Sutherlin, 3/26/1936 – 5/20/2026

Vernon was the son of Verly D. and Hazel P. (Laudig) Sutherlin. Joann was the daughter of Alva L. and Agnes D. (Shildmyer) Hubble. They were married on June 11, 1955. They were both employed by IBM in Greencastle at the time which is where they met. They have 4 children: Teresa Jo (Terri) McKee (Maurice), Michael Euguene Sutherlin (Jane), Trudi Anne Sutherlin, and Tammi Marie Parker (David). They have 7 grandchildren: Deborah Lynn McKee-Merritt (Jeffery), Sara Marie Byrum, Joanna Elizabeth Goldman (Hank), Jeremiah Eugene Sutherlin (Tish), Tyler David Parker, Molli Marie Newby (Tyler), and Ami Elizabeth Erickson (Kendal). They have 10 great grandchildren: Ava, Karma, Ali, Sydney, Noah, Reece, Evi, Griffin, Gwyn, Rowen, and Iris who is due in July. They are also survived by a brother Oren (Doc) Sutherlin (Brenda), sisters, Vera Hughes, Phyllis Wolverton, Janet Short, and Wanda Noland (Paul), and sister-in-laws Barbara Sutherlin and Kathy Sutherlin. They were preceded in death by their parents, brothers Lawrence (Tobe) Sutherlin, James Sutherlin, Robert Hubble, Alva (Bud) Hubble, Donald Hubble, sister-in-laws Norma Hubble, Susie Hubble, and Julia Sutherin, brother-in-laws, Larry Hughes and John Wolverton.

Vernon graduated from Cloverdale High School in 1950. He served in the US Army from 1951-1954 where he was stationed at Schofield Barracks & Ft. Stafter in Honolulu, Hawaii, as Infantry and Military Police—361st Mil. Police Co. He worked for IBM in Greencastle for 33 years before the plant closed in March of 1987. When IBM left, Red bought a Woodmizer portable sawmill. He sawed lumber for a number of people as well as for himself and his family. He also did custom hay baling for himself and other people. He served as a Special Deputy under Sheriff Jim Baugh. Vernon was a member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Paul’s.

Joann graduated from Greencastle High School in 1954. She worked for IBM while in high school and upon graduation (1954-56). She also worked for Dr. Marvel in Greencastle for many years after her kids were in school. They were members of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. Joann was an active member of the Ladies Guild at the church for many, many years of which she was in charge of the funeral dinners for the parish.

They raised and showed National Appaloosa Ponies (NAPIs) in Indiana, Illinois, and Oklahoma and won many awards for over ten years. In 1976 they won the Family Sportsman Award in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They have also received the Family Horse & Pony Award in Putnam County when all 7 of their grandchildren were showing and then a few years ago when 2 of their great granddaughters were showing. The have also raised beef cattle. In later years they had Pedro a donkey that everyone in the neighborhood would stop to talk with him and also feed him carrots.

Visitation will be at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 27, 4-8 p.m. with a Rosary led by the Knights of Columbus at 7:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be Thursday, May 28, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Greencastle. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery. Donations may be made to St. Paul’s Ladies Guild Scholarship Fund, the Knights of Columbus of St. Paul’s, or the Greencastle Alumni Dollars for Scholars, Inc. Scholarship Fund.
