Mary M. (Stewart) Wicker

Mary M. (Stewart) Wicker passed away January 24, 2026, at Walker Place in Shelbyville, Indiana. 

She was born October 1, 1928, in Bartholomew County the oldest of five children of Will W. and May E. (Conner) Stewart.
She graduated salutatorian of the Waldron class of 1946 and attended Ball State Teachers’ College two years, planning to be a physical education teacher.  While at Ball State, Lowell and Olive Lou (Monroe) Williams introduced Mary to Gene G. Wicker of Shelby County.  The Williams’ and the Wickers remained close life-long friends.  Mary and Gene married May 8, 1948, and he preceded her in death December 17, 2022.
Mary was an active partner in their farming operation for almost 75 years, managing 500 laying hens, enjoyed gardening and canning vegetables, and driving grain trucks.  She and her husband enjoyed traveling and visited all US States, except Alaska and Delaware.
Mrs. Wicker was a dedicated servant to her community.  She was a member of Little Blue River Baptist Church, had been active in the Ladies Aid, and was formerly a member of Morristown United Methodist Church.  She had been a Brownie Scout leader, vacation Bible School teacher, and 4-H member and 4-H leader.  She was a long-time member and past officer of Merry Mixers Home Demonstration Club.  
Mary served for 16 years on the Board of Directors and was past president of the Shelbyville/Shelby County Public Library.  She was a member and past leader of Mu Beta Reading Club of Morristown, and a member and past Vice-Regent of Mary Mott Greene DAR.
Mrs. Wicker was a certified McGowen Method Rug Hooking teacher, giving lessons with Jean White of Morristown, and then in her own home for many years.  She shared demonstrating her craft with others at the Shelby County Historical Society Pioneer Fair and at the State Fair Pioneer Village for many years.
Survivors include her four children, Marsha (Ron) Hamilton, Tom (Cheri), and John (Krista) Wicker of Shelby County and Nancy (Matthew Murray) Wicker of Oxford, Mississippi.  Six grandchildren are:  Karie (Chris) Wicker-Romano; Tommy, Alex, and Ethan Wicker, Shane (Makenzie) Rasnick Vero Beach, Florida, and Sara Rasnick of Indianapolis, Ind.; and one great-granddaughter, Kennedy Romano.  Mary is survived by one brother, Richard Stewart of Shelbyville, and preceded in death by two brothers, William and Joseph Stewart, and one sister Joyce McNeely.
Visitation will be from 10 am to Noon, Saturday, January 31, 2026, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 124 E. North St. in Morristown.
Funeral services will follow at Noon, Saturday, at the funeral home, with Pastor Kenneth Morgan officiating.
Interment will be at Asbury Cemetery in Morristown.
