Doris Jane Mathies, 94, of Shelbyville

Doris Jane Mathies, 94, of Shelbyville, passed away Sunday, March 29, 2026, at Ashford Place Health Campus.

She was born June 7, 1931, in Dubois, IN to Albert Matheis and Lorine (Knies) Matheis.

Jane grew up in the Jasper area and graduated from Dubois High School with the Class of 1949.

She remained in that area until she and her husband moved to Shelbyville in February of 1966.  Jane was instrumental in starting Mathies Landscaping, Inc. with her husband and family.  She was the secretary and ran the office for over 25 years.

She was a devout Catholic and longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where she grew her relationship with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  She was also a member of St. Anne Altar Society and the Murat Veteran Car Club Auxiliary.  Jane had a love for attending Mass and enjoyed her time as a lunch lady at St. Joseph Catholic School.

She also enjoyed her flowers, dressing up and wearing nice jewelry and living in Florida during the winter months.  Her most precious memories were made of camping with her family through the years, playing board games with her grandchildren and spending time with all her family.

She married Leroy Mathies on May 24, 1952, and he preceded her in death on August 20, 2000. They cherished 48 loving years of marriage together.

Mrs. Mathies is survived by her son, Steve (wife, Debra) Mathies; daughters, Karen Bushfield, Sandra Mathies-Borden, Tamara (husband, Gary) Long, Marilyn (husband, John) Branstetter; sons, Randy Mathies, and Dana (wife, Robin) Mathies and daughter, Angela (husband, Jeremey) File; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; her brothers, Jim Matheis, and Jerry Matheis; and sister, Virlee Dedrick.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Robert Matheis, and sister, Gladys Stratman.

Visitation will be Tuesday, March 31, 2026, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service, 703 S. Harrison Street, Shelbyville, IN 46176. The rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.  at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 125 E. Broadway St., Shelbyville, IN with Father Mike Keucher officiating.

Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of McKay Manor and Ashford Place Health Campus for their care and compassion for their mother over the last few years.
