YMCA to operate Julia & Nichlolas Runnebohm Early Learning Center

A major change has been announced for the newly opened Julia & Nicholas Runnebohm Early Learning Center in Shelbyville.

The center opened in December 2024 to provide more families with access to high-quality early childhood education. For the first six months, Bright Horizons Early Education and Preschool provided childcare services at the center.

On Tuesday, parents and staff were notified that Bright Horizons is being transitioned out and replaced by the Decatur Shelby County YMCA. The transition is expected to be complete by September 1.

The Y exists to strengthen communities—and this is a powerful way we can do just that.”

The center will serve up to 192 children from 6 weeks to 5 years old, focusing on social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development in a safe and supportive environment. The YMCA is actively finalizing licensing, hiring, and facility preparations, with a full transition planned by September 1.

Community members can expect enrollment updates and upcoming open house events over the next few months. The Y will also host employer briefings and family nights to introduce the center and foster connection.

The YMCA is launching a new scholarship fund to help families who may not qualify for public assistance but still face financial barriers. Businesses are also invited to join as corporate partners—helping subsidize tuition for their workforce and supporting long-term community success.

In a note to families with children at the Earl Learning Center, the Y invited them  in to meet the leadership team. They will be at the center during the following times:

● Thursday, June 19 from 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.

● Monday, June 23 from 4 - 6 p.m.

● Tuesday, June 24 from 4 - 6 p.m.

● Wednesday, June 25 from 7:30 a.m. -9:30 a.m.

Mackenzie Pickerrell is scheduled to appear on The Morning Show on GIANT fm on Friday at 8:30 a.m. to discuss this week’s announced transition.
